Orpheus
The Orpheus is, even by Imperium terms, an old ship, the site of its creation has been lost to time but there are records of it serving as part of Battlefleet Pacificus over 6000 years ago and a ship with the same registry serving in a sector fleet near the Eye of Terror 3000 years ago although their descriptions are very different, suggesting they may be different ships or several significant rebuilds occurred between these periods: it may be that very little of the original ship actually remains in the current configuration.
The Orpheus's history becomes more concrete approximately 1000 years ago when the ship finished a refit on holy Mars itself. The ship was then placed of a battlefleet acting to support a crusade aiming to expand the borders of the Imperium to the Galactic north. The battles dragged on and after 300 years the great, great, great grand children of the original crew tired of the ceaseless war rebelled against their officers leading to a mutiny which badly damaged the ship. It under went a further refit, this time acting as a mini carrier being fitted with multiple launch bays, an experimental design.
The experiment eventually turned out to be a failure, it was found that the number of fighters and bombers the ship could carry was to small to be effective and the ship was to fragile and under gunned to be able to hold its own with enemy capital ships. The Orpheus faught in many more battles but did not serve outstandingly. Finally 300 years ago a luck shot from an Xenos cruiser caught the fuel storage facilities for the fighters and the ship burned from inside to out.
The wreck was decided to be to badly damaged to be salvageable and sold off as scrap. There a Scion of the Anastasia noble house who had obtained a warrant of trade saw an opportunity and bought up the ship. The house almost bankrupted itself refitting the ship and making it spaceworthy. With some foresight the noble decided to hide some of its components from unfriendly eyes.
The ship served it rogue trader master well for 200 years acting as a small scale trading and raiding vessels on the eastern borders of the Imperium. There it remained until its latest master died in a feud with another family and its new owner caused an incident with the local military causing it to fleet across the galaxy towards the Abyss.
