'''NOTE: orcedinburgh.co.uk‘s website is being shuttered at the end of 2026: Lockdown and Discord pretty much killed forums and it’s barely used. It’s a pity but only a few folk turn up on the forum compared to the Discord at discord.gg/gJYJ7T32W9 which will stay. The Facebook page and attendant group will likely disappear soon! If you have anything you want to keep from the wiki, you may want to export it. It will become read-only and will have a different URL later this year.

If you've never played an RPG before it can be quite daunting. However, if you've played a computer RPG like Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate or even World of Warcraft then you're well on your way! Even so, most folk pick up RPGs in the first session. Shows like Critical Role etc show a very stylized - and occasionally unrealistic - views of RPG sessions.
It's also worth check out the [[ORC FAQ]].
=Getting involved=

The best way to get involved is to do the following:

*Introduce yourself in the [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum] forum.
*Regularly check the site - games fill up extremely quickly, so the [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/looking-to-run-a-game Looking to run a game area] is a good place to check often.
*Ask questions. Seriously. It helps.
*Send a PM (Personal Message) to a GM if you're interested in their game.
*If there's a particular game you'd like to play ask in the [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/looking-to-run-a-game] area - you may be surprised!
*Try some of of the single session games (one-shots) and see how you get on.
=Places to Play=
There's a number of venues outside ORC, running games like D&D - see [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/edinburgh-gaming/ Edinburgh Gaming]

=Playing the Game=
Just some basic things that probably don't need saying, but sometimes do. This holds true for players and GMs!
*Turn up on time: if you are running late or can't make it, let the GM or another of the players know (via ORC Messaging) in good time. Or Whatsapp, etc.
*Check you know where the venue is (the Events calendar has Google map links to most frequented venues).
*Where venues serve food or drink DON'T bring your own.. These places could kick you out - and the other players - as a result. They're well within their rights to do so.
*It's a social activity but don't forget that others are there to have fun - no one wants to be sworn at, yelled at, or even hit. It's a game.
*Don't be overly critical of other players or the GM. No one likes a smartypants.
*Let everyone have their turn, but make sure you get your own go.
*Have fun.

For details on actually GMing a game at ORC, see [[Running a game at ORC]].

Bill:

The following could be considered a "best practice" guide - not just for games running at ORC but in general. There's also a useful thread on the forum: https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/ORC-Chat/14130-gm-tips-suggestions-and-advice-from-gms

=Choosing a System=
Here's where you need to self-promote. By far the most popular systems at ORC are D&D, Pathfinder, and Call of Cthulhu. These games are always popular, although GMs may need to be strict as to what particular ruleset mods or PC types are allowed (e.g. PHB only, core rulebook only, etc.). If your game is little known, try promoting it on the forums - talk about it: the setting, the PCs, ruleset, etc. Beginning GMs often find that some players know the rules extremely well, so they can let these players help provide advice to those less sure of themselves (including the GM). See if there is anyone interested among your friends or societies you are already a member of - even online forums for the games themselves.

=Finding Players=
Aim for six players. Most games have 3-6 at ORC. That way GMs can cover the occasional absence, without the game becoming overcrowded. Bill estimates that in any game you'll likely lose 1/3rd of any players in the first few sessions as well. You can use the '''Looking to Run A Game''' area of the forum https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&view=category&catid=82&Itemid=2240.

Choose and day and venue for you to run as a GM.

It's best to talk about the game in the forum and give yourself about a month or so to run up to this. Smaller and lesser known system you may have to go into depth about the settings and rules! Put an event in the [http://orcedinburgh.co.uk/orc-events Calendar] when you're ready. Folk can register for it at that point. The event is also published on the ORC Facebook [http://facebook.com/orcedinburgh page]. There's also an ORC [https://www.facebook.com/groups/605318762823146/ Facebook group], but that's barely used now..

Talk to folk in other games, or at the occasional pub meets or games, but don't set out to "steal" players from established games. You can also contact players directly - check the [http://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/Introductions Introductions] section of the Forum for new players and send them a PM. Also spread the word outside ORC and get other folk onto the site if they are interested.

=Session 0 and Social Contracts=
Social Contracts allow GMs and players to work out what is acceptable in a game and what the group as a whole looks for. In can be as simple as kick-in-the-door-dungeoneering or a high-end political shenanigans. Everybody gets to start from the same page. '''Session 0''' is when this happens, often along with character creation.
There's absolutely no problem with running a session 0 at Roleplay Haven nights. They often do games pitches the week before each quarter although tchnically you can begin any time. Aim for 4-6 players, and give yourself two weeks or so to allow RolePlay Haven and ORC to get the message out there on social media (Facebook, Discords etc). A Session 0 at the Mercat or any venue is best. D&D games will fill up fast - others require a bit more talking up by the GM (think marketing),

Give yourself a few sessions to get to know the players before commiting yourself to a long campaign. It's better to do that and come back later with a different group if things aren't working out.

Create your characters in Session 0, make sure the players know the starting level etc. If you need extra PHB etc. just ask me - I have two I can lend out

Don't worry about party balance - contrary to popular belief it's not necessary to have a healer or rogue etc.

Also, it's OK for PCs to run away - old-school D&D could be lethal and "Challenge Rating" is a guideline for GMs, not a hard rule. If low-level PCs encounter a dragon, they're wise to run!

At Session 0, layout some basic expectations - e.g. No evil alignments, possible content (grimdark etc.), dungeon bash or poltical etc. Also, what rulebooks and any optional rules are OK - some D&D races an be problematic in certain settings. Monte Cook's checklist might be of use - see https://mcpl.info/sites/default/files/images/consent-in-gaming-form-fillable-checklist-2019-09-13.pdf - it gives some basic themes that might be triggers.

If you do want to go ahead let Bill know what the blurb is for the game - around 250 words with an introductory hook. Give a little background about the setting and campaign. Enough to get players hooked and interested - the RPH as a venue is sorted (or others such as Red Dice etc., and you can also post here in https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/looking-to-run-a-game and on the RolePlayHaven (https://discord.gg/Tyz2pQS) and ORC (https://discord.gg/tUHcSeP) Discords.

When you're ready, put the game on the RolePlay Haven website - you'll need to let Bill know the email when you're signed up with so he can arrange GM-level access to submit your game.

=When to Run=
Pick a date that works for you as a GM, not just the players. Weekly or fortnightly works best (e.g. Wednesday nights at the RolePlay Haven) . Too often, and a GM will likely "burn out", and players will often have scheduling conflicts. Too long between games, and players may lose interest or the game drops its drive and energy (not to mention folks remembering what happened!). If you're gaming on a week-night allow time for people to get to the venue, especially from work, and try and finish at a reasonable hour. If you're playing on a weekend, try and keep the game to 4-6 hours. Stop at a cliff-hanger moment!

=How to run/Be a GM or DM=
There's whole podcasts dedicated to being a GM/DM. Most say you need to do x or y, otherwise you're doomed. That's nonsense. As a GM, it's your story. Never forget its about having fun. As a new GM you'll forget stuff, have to look it up, make mistakes and 'fess up to them when you do.

=Finding a Venue=
Always a tricky point to bring up. A lot of ORC games happen at peoples homes, but there's a number of venues to use as well. It's a good idea to check with the owners of these venues regarding bookings, and remember: if they sell food or drink, they expect you to buy stuff there. DON'T bring your own. Bill's web page lists some of these places at https://www.themandragora.com/edinburgh-gaming/ Make sure everyone feels safe in the environment you're playing in - be considerate of boundaries and common courtesy.

=Safety=
Let's be honest here - gaming does not always have a good rep regarding safe spaces and harassment. If you see anything untoward happening, speak out - whether your are the subject of it or not. As a new GM, make sure your players - and venue - are comfortable with certain topics, especially in horror games. Some games may prefer their players (or GM) to have a card they can hold up if a subject is making them uncomfortable. Use the X card if necessary.

There's also a forum thread for GM suggestions here: https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/kunena/Community-Specific/14130-gm-tips-suggestions-and-advice-from-gms

=What is ORC Edinburgh?=

The Edinburgh-based Open Roleplaying Community is a group of like-minded people who meet regularly to play roleplaying games (RPGs). We play a variety of games: the ever-popular Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, Pathfinder, More on our history can be found at ORC Edinburgh's History.

=Where is ORC?=
We're based in Edinburgh, in Scotland, UK. More specifically, we meet every Saturday at various venues throughout Edinburgh (see the [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum Forum] for details!).

=Where can I buy RPGs and dice?=
Ooh, all over the place. We heartily recommend supporting your local games retailers, which, if you're based in Edinburgh, can be found [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/links-to-edinburgh-games-shops here ] although there are many online retailers such as Amazon.

=Can I join ORC?=
Yes you can. In fact, consider yourself a member, effective immediately. It doesn't cost anything. Now that you've passed our rigorous selection process, why not pop along next weekend? Most of ORC are in their 20s-40s, although we do have both younger and older members - we welcome anybody looking to run or play in a game. Games run to about 5.00pm. New faces are always welcome!

=When is ORC?=
We usually meet every Saturday for most games (although others do run on different days). Most people start to arrive between 12.15pm and 13:00pm with games starting at 1pm and run until 5pm. However, other members of ORC also run games outside the Saturday afternoons.

=OK, where do I start?=
Check [[New_to_ORC]].

=How do I contact other site members?=
You can send and receive Personal Messages (PMs) via the ORC Messaging [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/orc-messaging link], or by clicking the hyperlink under ORC Info. Please do not use it to share illegal PDFs.

=How do I contact the Site Administrator/Webmaster?=
You can either send a PM to Bill or use the [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/contact-orc Contact ORC] form.

=How do I go about submitting an Event or Venue?=
The Events calendar contains all events that we know of. Submit an event by choosing "Submit an Event," clicking the icon in the right-hand corner, or clicking the [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/events/submit-event Submit an Event link] or [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/events/Categories/submit-venue Submit Venue] in the main menu. For venues, provide as much information as possible - especially how to get there! Note that you can set a recurring event by choosing Daily, Weekly etc. and set the recurrence there, e.g. '''Weekly 2''' for fortnightly like most ORC games.

=How do I sign up for a game?=
Each game has an entry in the ORC Events Calendar. Click on the link and you should see an "I will go this event". Tick the box, and that's it. You can also cancel your registration for it in the same way. Most games are usually full so check the description or with the GM first. Some games may also have a waiting list.

=How do I change my password for the site?=
You must login to do this first. Click on ORC Forum. Click on My Profile, then upon Edit Your Details. Enter your new password, and then enter it again in the "Verify Password" box. You can also use this to change your email address or name as well.

=How can I get space/logins for the ORC wiki?=
Either contact the site administrator via Contact ORC, or send a PM to Bill, stating who you are and what the link is to be called. You'll need to register to use it.

=Why do I need to login again to the wiki?=
Mediawiki and Joomla (the site backend) are separate software - they don't work together. They used to, but now require separate logins

=What's on at ORC?=
The ORC Events calendar details a number of games coming up. You can either submit your own event or join an existing one. Gaming Conventions and other events can also be listed.

=How often do games run at ORC?=
Games usually run fortnightly, but there's usually a game every week.

=How do I join a game at ORC?=
It doesn't take long (note that you will need to be a registered user and signed in on the site to do so):

# Click on the Event.
# Tick the box next to "I will go to this Event."
# Click on Register.
# Or just turn up on the day before 1pm.

=Can anyone run at ORC?=
Yes, but do try and publicise your game first - submit an event, and post in the [https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/looking-to-run-a-game Looking to run a game] area. That way you'll be able to gauge interest too.

=Does anyone run Game X at ORC?=
You can find out if anyone GMs a particular game by asking in the Looking for a game area. If enough people are interested then someone will likely step up!

=What are "one-shots"?=
One shots are single game run on a day by a GM. They can be to test a scenario, playtest a game or simply be a one-time only game. They're useful for introducing players to a setting or system without committing to a campaign.

=What was the ORC Shared Campaign/New World?=
The shared campaign setting of the New World came into being in late 2007. It was the result of several months work by a number of GMs. Unfortunately, the amount of work proved too much and the project fell by the wayside. It is still available for use as a shared setting.

The system used in the New World campaign was Dungeons &amp; Dragons 3.5, although there are some custom rules. These are incorporated into the Explorer's Guide to the New World which you can access through the ORC Downloads section. Information on the setting is also available on the ORC Wiki which also features some updated rules.

The setting is similar to that of the arrival of the the Conquistadors in South America, although the native inhabitants are the Reptilian Lizardfolk.

<metadesc>Bill's reruns of classic AD&D adventures</metadesc>
Ashes of Freedom: Rebirth is a (A)D&D campaign that sees Volkrania 60 years after the [[Purge of Fire]], a sequel to my popular [[Ashes of Freedom]] campaigns. The original campaign was created for AD&D (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons) 2nd edition, so I returned there, and will hopefully open up new lands (or even old lands) for the PCs to explore, with some classic adventures. The first was the Temple of Elemental Evil.

==Ruleset==

*AD&D uses the core rulebooks - Players Handbook (PHB), Dungeon Masters Guide (DMG), Tome of Magic (ToM) and the various Monstrous Compendiums. I managed the PCs using the core rules CD-ROM.
*5e rules uses the Player Handbook (PHB) - other books are at DMs discretion.

==Recent History==

The fall of Danil Eggar's plans and thwarting of Demogorgon's invasion of the the Prime Material Plane caused caused significant upheaval beyond Volkrania itself, possibly even to the fabric of time and space. The Sacrifice of Pyrrhus meant that a terrible artefact had been activated, but its presence has yet to be felt. The Elven Gods reopened the Ways to their people, although the Elves that returned in [[The Homecoming]] are apparently colder and far less willing to co-exist with humanity and the other races. It began with [[The Temple of Elemental Evil]].

<metadesc>Tabletop rpg information for the Ashes of Freedom Campaign Dungeons and Dragons setting: detailing the country, politics, and a number of house rules. It is run every fortnight at ORC in Edinburgh</metadesc>

''Volkrania. A land of towering mountains, deep forests, ice-cold lakes, and windswept coasts.''

''There's plenty of excitement to be found here. Ancient ruins beckon. The Remnant plot and scheme. Orcs and their kin harry civilisation from the Eastlands. Winds whisper of treasures to be found within icy mountains. In the subterranean darkness of the DeepEarth, ancient secrets lie forgotten.''

''From deep mines where dwarves toil in the darkness to the icy heights of Tarad's Teeth, Volkrania is a land of adventure. It's a beautiful country. It's a dangerous country. But to you, it's home...''

'''Ashes of Freedom''' was initially a campaign setting for the 3.5/4th edition of the popular '''Dungeons & Dragons''' roleplaying game (RPG). However, I've found that there are a number of issues with the systems. Originally set in my AD&D world, I modified it to fit into the D&D 4th edition system. When I became disillusioned with the 4th edition system, I began developing D&D 3.6. These pages contain 'House' rules as such, as well as a guide to the actual campaign. As of June 2012, I've made a return to the setting - this time time focussing on a number of classic scenarios, which may lead the group far from Volkrania... I'm calling it [[Ashes of Freedom: Rebirth]]

The campaign is set in [[Volkrania]], the northern-most country of the continent of [[Erilya]]. Cut off from much of the land by the goblinoid-held territories of the Wildlands to the East, [[Volkrania]] is fiercely independent and ruled over by King Thrommel I. The [[Orcgate War]] has been over for some time and the country has been rebuilt, although many of the scars remain.

When I ran the original campaign, it dealt with the Mandragora invading [[Volkrania]] and the lead-up to the invasion and [[Purge of Fire]]. The [[Attack on Kratishold]] was one of the best sessions I've ever run. The campaign I previously ran is set 5 years after the [[Purge of Fire]] took place. The [[Ashes of Freedom: Rebirth]] campaign latest campaign is 60 years later, after the Purge, revisited for 5e.

Bill:

<metadesc>Grim and gritty D&D campaign with tones of dark fantasy. Uses alternative D&D 3.G rules for free-form character creation.</metadesc>

Every character begins the game as an average person in terms of actual combat training: an inexperienced youth, of whichever race they so choose, with base skills reflecting their relatively mundane occupation. They also possess a set of traits, that flesh out the fine details of some of their skill abilities, their mindset and strong points, and also their shortcomings.

You can get a 3.G character sheet [http://www.orcedinburgh.co.uk/orc-downloads/func-startdown/20/ here].

=='''At 1st level:'''==

==='''Ability Scores'''===
These represent your raw physical and mental potential. A value of 10-11 in a given score is the human average. See [http://www.d20srd.org/srd/theBasics.htm#abilityScores here] for a detailed explanation. There is a modifier associated with the ability score value: if you have it higher than 10-11, the modifier is positive and works as a bonus; if it is lower then it is negative and works as a penalty.
To assign your ability score values, use the 25 point-buy system, or consult [[25pointBuyChart| this chart]] with pre-generated values to assign.

*'''Strength (Str)'''= Adds to melee combat rolls, and to melee, thrown and composite bow weapon damage. Important for physical endurance skills. If reduced to 0, you become paralyzed.
*'''Dexterity (Dex)'''= Adds to AC, to ranged and thrown combat rolls, and to Reflex defense. Important for agility and coordination skills. If reduced to 0, you become paralyzed.
*'''Constitution (Con)'''= Adds to HP, to the Staggered buffer zone, and to Fortitude defense. If reduced to 0, you die.
*'''Intelligence (Int)'''= Increases skill points gained. Important for various Knowledge skills. If reduced to 0, you become comatose.
*'''Wisdom (Wis)'''= Adds to Will defense. Important for concentrating and being alert. If reduced to 5, you become insane. If reduced to 0, you become comatose.
*'''Charisma (Cha)'''= Important for almost all of the social skills. If reduced to 0, you become comatose.

==='''[[Races|Race]]'''===
Choose your race, from among humans, elves, gnomes or dwarves.
Click [[Races|here]] for a breakdown of racial abilities, history and general outlook of each.
You can further customize your race's abilities via traits and flaws, or give it supernatural abilities by choosing to be a 'special case'.

==='''Hit Points(HP)'''===
These represent the amount of physical punishment you can withstand.
Your Hit point total is equal to:
6 + Con mod.

'''"Disabled" buffer zone:'''
Once you exhaust your HP, you start burning down this buffer zone of additional HP. While in this buffer zone, your character is stumbling around, staggered, and needs to put himself together or escape. If he exhausts the buffer, he goes into negative HP and becomes unconscious.
Disabled zone HP = Con score

==='''Defenses'''===
*'''Fort'''= Con modifier + (bonuses gained by training)
*'''Ref'''= Dex modifier + (bonuses gained by training)
*'''Will'''= Wis modifier + (bonuses gained by training)
*'''Armor Class (AC)''' = Dex modifier + (any armor or shield bonuses) + Dodge modifiers
''These are what you roll to defend yourself against opponents’ attack rolls.''

==='''Traits & Flaws''' ===
Your character has 10 trait points to spend at character creation (humans have more). All of these must be invested. You can get extra trait points to spend at the cost of acquiring Flaws, up to a maximum of 10 extra trait points.

All of these points must be invested at character creation (unlike skill points), but your character may gain some new traits throughout his life (at the DMs discretion). One of the things you can invest your points in is to be a ‘special case’.

==='''[[Skills]]'''===
You have a number of skill points equal to (12+Int modifier) x4 at first level. If your Int modifier is negative, then exclude it from the calculation. Invest one point in a skill you have unlocked to raise 1 rank in it.
You must invest at least half of your skill points in the skills you have available at the beginning of the campaign. You may leave the rest of the points unspent, which represents your ‘latent potential’, and use them to learn abilities from sources you find along your way. The full list of skills is [[Skills#Skill list|here]].

When using a skill, you roll a Skill check:
1d20 + ranks in skill + relevant Ability Score modifier + other bonuses
==='''Languages'''===
Your character starts play knowing his native language, plus a number of extra languages equal to his Int modifier.
Languages available (at character creation) are:

*'''Gunssab''' (human, The Fringe in Ivernia)
*'''Sabellic''' (human, Mil in Ivernia)
*'''Old Gutnish''' (human, northern tribes in Ivernia and Hyperborea)
*'''Erisse''' (Elf, Ivernia)
*'''Goiodon''' (gnome, Ivernia)
*'''Kolkub''' (dwarf, Ivernia)
*'''Epic Achaean''' (human, mostly all of Archipelago)
*'''Kallikan''' (gnome, Archipelago)
*'''Novgor''' (human, The Khaganate)

Dialects within each exist, but these are the major groups. People living in the Fringe generally pick up on other languages even from other races.

For every 2 ranks in Linguistics, your character learns yet another language, provided he has been exposed to it or has someone to teach him.

Bill: /* Jammers */

Assuming that they find a source
of food and shelter, the characters
face two problems. First, they must
avoid being caught by the sentinels.
Second, they must try to contact
other mutants and form some sort of
resistance network.

Avoiding being caught by the
sentinels is very difficult. The
sentinels are designed and equipped
specifically to capture mutants. Their
organic analyzers can perform
scanning sweeps across hundreds of
miles and pinpoint the location of a
mutant to within a few hundred feet.
To avoid being captured, the
characters must devise a means of
masking their presence from these
scanners, confusing the scanners, or
jamming them across a large area.
=Jammers=
Jamming the scanners is very
risky. It hides the mutants' location
but it also sends a loud, clear
message to the sentinels that
something is going on. The sentinels
immediately go to work trying to
locate the source of the jamming
signal. If the area affected is very
large, this may take a long time. If
the jammer is weak, it can be located
very quickly.

Fortunately, jammers are easy to
build. They have only one applicable
rank: range. The ranges achieved at
various ranks are listed on the
Jammer Range table.

'''Jammer Range'''

'''Rank''' '''Range'''

Shift 0      1 area

Feeble       2 areas

Poor         4 areas

Typical      6 areas

Good        20 areas

Excellent   1 mile

Remarkable  5 miles

Incredible  20 miles

Amazing     50 miles

Monstrous   150 miles

Unearthly   500 miles

The jammers range is a radius.
For example, a jammer with
Incredible range has a radius of 20
miles, so it jams an area of
approximately 1,250 square miles.

Everything within its range is blacked
out to a sentinel's organic analyzer.
As soon as a jammer is activated,
all sentinels in the region go on alert.
They are looking not only for the
jammer but for the mutant activity it
is obviously masking.

To determine how much time the
sentinels need to locate and destroy
the jammer, make a FEAT roll using
the jammer's range.

*White result-one hour.
*Green result- 1 to 1 0 hours.
*Yellow result-1 day.
*Red result- 1 to 10 days.

If the jammer's range is Typical or
less, however, it is automatically
found within one hour. Such small
jammers are useful for creating
diversions, but little else.

Because of the sentinels' learning
program, they are hard to fool twice.
After locating a particular type of
jammer, the time needed to locate
any similar jammer is halved. Thus,
character's must redesign their
jammer each time they build one to
get full benefit from it.

The weight of a jammer equals its
range rank number in pounds. An
Excellent range jammer, for
example, weighs about 20 pounds. It
is easily portable with its antenna
array folded. A Monstrous jammer,
however, weighs 75 pounds and is
significantly less portable.

=Wild Weasels=
A wild weasel is an electronic
decoy designed to imitate the
organic signature of a mutant. Wild
weasels create a multitude of mutant
readings on the sentinel's scanners,
allowing real mutants to blend into
the general chaos without attracting
special attention.

Obviously, a wild weasel also
attracts the attention of every
sentinel in the area. It is much harder
to locate than a jammer, but is
correspondingly more difficult to
design and build.

A wild weasel has three applicable
ranks: range, resolution, and
personality.

Wild Weasel ranges are identical
to jammer ranges. False readings
will be created within that range.
Resolution is the number of false
images the weasel can create. It
equals the device's resolution rank
number. For example, a wild weasel
with Remarkable resolution can
create up to 30 false mutant
readings.

Personality is the device's ability to
mimic the organic signature of a
specific mutant. When sorting out
the multitude of targets, a sentinel
zeroes in on recognized signatures
before pursuing unidentified mutants
(unless the unidentified mutants are
much closer}. It is a good idea,
therefore, to program the weasel so
it creates images of famous mutant
fugitives; Wolverine is a favorite
because he tops the sentinels' "Most
Wanted" list. Another trick is
programming the weasel to project
multiple images of the mutants who
will be using it for cover, making it
impossible for sentinels to pick out
the real mutants.

To determine how much time
sentinels need to locate the wild
weasel, make a FEAT roll using its
range rank.
*White result- 1 to 1 0 hours.
*Green result-1 day.
*Yellow or Red result-1 to 10 days.
When moving under the cover of a
wild weasel, characters still risk
being intercepted by sentinels. Make
a FEAT roll using the weasel's
resolution rank:
*If the weasel's personality rank exceeds its resolution, any colored result means the mutants have not been singled out;
*If the weasel's resolution rank equals its personality rank, a yellow result is needed to avoid interception;
*If its resolution exceeds its personality, only a red result will protect the mutants.
This roll must be made once per
hour that the characters are exposed
to the sentinels.

A typical wild weasel is the size of
a television set; those with low
resolution ranks are the size of small
portable sets, while powerful models
are the size of a 23-inch console.
=Masking Devices=
A masking device, or simply mask,
is an electronic device which fools
the sentinels' organic analyzers into
concluding that no mutants are
present. It masks the mutants'
presence without tipping off the
sentinels that anything is out of
order.

A mask is the most powerful of the
three devices described here. Masks
are not terribly difficult to build,
either, but they require some special
components and data which are hard
to come by.

Most importantly, building an
effective mask requires a thorough
understanding of how a sentinel's
organic analyzer works. This means
the characters need an organic
analyzer to examine (an actual
analyzer isn't needed if the designer
can somehow get the technical
specs, but these are harder to come
by than real analyzers}. All analyzers
work the same way, so the unit from
a mark IV sentinel is just as helpful
as ons from an omega sentinel.

Also, one of the components of a
mask is a refractive fold generator,
which must be built separately. This device has a single applicable
rank-Remarkable-and requires no
special components.

The mask itself has two applicable
ranks: range and density.
Range determines both how large
an area the device can conceal and
how many characters it can conceal.
This information is listed on the Mask
Ranges table.

'''Mask Ranges'''

Rank        Range  Characters

Feeble      2 feet    1

Poor        4 feet    2

Typical     6 feet    3

Good        8 feet    4

Excellent  10 feet    6

Remarkable  1 area    8

Incredible  1 area    10

Amazing     1 area    15

Monstrous   2 areas   25

Unearthly   4 areas   40

For example, a mask with Remarkable range conceals up to
eight characters in the same area as
the device. A mask with Monstrous
range conceals up to 25 characters
in the same area as the device and
one adjacent area.

The mask's density rank measures
how difficult it is for an organic
analyzer to penetrate the screen.

A typical mask is portable, about
the size of a suitcase. It can be made
smaller, of course, for additional
column shifts.

=Minuteman=
A minuteman is a remote sentinel
ambushing device. It lures sentinels
into range by creating the image of a
mutant and then detonates,
destroying the sentinels along with
itself.

A minuteman has two ranks: lure
and blast. Once the device is placed
and activated, a FEAT roll is made
once per day against its lure rank. A
green result means that one sentinel
has been lured close to the device. A
yellow result lures two sentinels and
a red result lures a triad of sentinels.
A white result means that no
sentinels found the minuteman, but
another roll can be made the next
day.

The minuteman's blast rank is the
strength of its attack when it
explodes. It makes one edged attack
against each sentinel in range. Since
most sentinels have Incredible body
armor, a device with less than
Incredible blast has no chance to
damage a sentinel.

Other sorts of minutemen can be
designed: incendiaries, energy
attacks, electronic brain scramblers,
or anything else the characters can
cobble together.

<metadesc>Bill's Cthulhutech RPG setting, Through the Looking Glass, set in 2085. Welcome to Edinburgh during the Aeon War! Includes a city map and describes Edinburgh and Scotland in 2085 in a world where Lovecraftian horror and emergent technologies blur the line between sorcery and technology.</metadesc>
[[File:CthulhutechLogo.png|center]]
''We will not go gently into the night. We're taking back what belongs to us. We're taking back our planet.''

Bill's Cthulhutech game set in the Edinburgh of 2085. It concentrates upon strong character-driven play, in games that will also feature my Arunstoun setting. Rather than focus on the tager/mecha angle, the game will concentrate more on the hapless mortals that are brought into contact with the World Beyond We Know.

This is the Strange Aeon. This is the future of Edinburgh. This is Cthulhutech.

=Edinburgh in 2085=
Edinburgh itself is not a single [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcology Arcology], but a group of district arcologies, owing to Edinburgh's unusual geography and geology. The arcologies themselves are closed off with a stringent series of checks in place, normally through single access points. Identities are checked thoroughly by NEG guards and all air traffic through the roof access ports are carefully monitored, and a sophisticated defence grid stands ready to protect the arcologies from attack.

Although much of Edinburgh has been rebuilt, the building styles remain faithful to their tenement roots - however these blocks are now far bigger, and often have the parks and hanging gardens throughout their structure. A shopping mall and arcade usually comprise the lower levels, often with a parking area. The weather within the arcologies is controlled to a certain degree, and occasional rain is scheduled to fall at specific times. Detached housing is popular among the rich, but few can afford the cost of a private home and garden within an arcology. Such individuals often live in large mansions outside the arcology, protected by a security grid and bodyguards.

The no-mans land between the arcologies consists of ruined tenements and overgrown structures - a basic subsistence lifestyle is the lot for those choosing this life. A few hardy souls live outside the city in this fashion, either out of choice or necessity. While gangs can be a problem, most communities are usually well-equipped and quite capable of defending themselves this close to the city. Police and NEG patrols regularly sweep the area, but there are plenty of places for people - and other things - to hide. Although local law enforcement does what it can, many of these areas are under control of gangs like the [[Black Banshees]] or [[Itochi]] ([[Nazzadi]] for "razorblades").

The roads between the arcolgies are carefully monitored, but there are those desperate enough to try to prey on passing traffic. Only a few organised gangs attempt this as the NEG takes a measured but harsh response to those attacking their citizens.

[[File:EdinburghMap2085.jpg |center]]

===Granton===
Granton is the oldest arcology in Scotland, and it shows it. Much of it is in in need of repair after the Arcanotech wars, and the whole district is dilapidated, with power outages, poor environmental control, and other mechanical and electrical faults. Living space is cheap if somewhat crowded, and crime and poverty are high here. The NEG are aware of the "lack of facilities" in the area, but have yet to act.
*[[Gallery of Modern Art]] - located in an area of open parkland, the site is now a war memorial.
*[[Hailesland]] - this badland is the site of the former Hailesland arcology south of the Granton arcology.
*[[The McKenzie Scheme]] - a dilapidated development that has somehow resisted demolition.

===New Town===
Although many of the old Georgian buildings were destroyed in the Arcanotech war, the actual appearance of the New Town has become grander, with the arcology following an "Neo-Georgian" architectural style. This means the buildings look much as they did, although they are far taller, and make better use of the internal space. The New Town district is one of the newer arcologies and remains popular among the wealthy.

===Old Town===
The Old Town district is believed to be the safest arcology in Scotland. Sentry weapon pods and law enforcement professionals are everywhere. Much of the city's commercial and government offices are here, and they take their safety and security seriously.

Many of the open areas contain war memorials and heroes of the Arcanotech war, including the [[Nazzadi]] leader, Vreta. A full size replica statue of a Claymore Mecha stands at the foot of where the Mound begins, overlooking the Gardens of Remembrance.

The District houses a number of NEG Offices (the [[Office Of Internal Security]], and the [[GIA]]) as well as being the seat of local government within the Castle Rock. The branch offices of a number of corporations are nearby including the [[Ashcroft Foundation]] (the Bank of Scotland building on the Mound) and [[Chrysalis Corporation]] (within the old Standard Life building on Lothian Road).

*[[Ashcroft Foundation Office]]
*[[Edinburgh Castle]]
*[[Princes Street]]
*[[Chrysalis Corporation Office]]
*[[OIS Station]]
*[[GIA Station]]
*Section 13 HQ, known as the "[[The Basement]]".
*[[Waverley Station]]

===Leith===
The Leith district extends down to Musselburgh. The old tenements that comprise much of the area were lucky to survive much of the bombing, and the developments were upgraded to heritage status. Although the buildings are old, many have been modernised and the area is extremely popular and lively. Most of Edinburgh's Nazzadi live here, and the arcology has a far more positive energy to it than other Districts. The Shore area remains a popular retail centre, with designer stores and improved amenities such as theatres and performance arenas - many of the Edinburgh Festival events take place here.

The area south of the Leith arcology is where warring gangs, including the [[Itochi]], compete for resources and control of this warren of craters bombed-out buildings. Some of the larger houses are still intact and are often claimed by gang leaders as their headquarters. It remains one of the most dangerous areas in Edinburgh, along with the badlands of the [[Hailesland]].

A mechanised infantry battalion maintains a presence in Musselburgh, due to the proximity to the [[Port Seton Quarantine Zone]].

*[[Red Light Club]]

===Southside===
The biggest Arcology in Edinburgh, and was rebuilt after being bombed heavily in the wars. Some younger Southsiders have never left the Arcology, attending school, then University before taking their first job without ever leaving the area.

The pace of life in the Southside is frenetic and rarely quiet. All streets have noise dampeners, but there's still a background hubbub at the best of times. Street markets are everywhere, selling university peeks and academic paraphernalia as well as more mundane items such as food and clothing. Many nightclubs, bars and eateries cater to the arcology's population and some are open 24 hours a day.

*The [[Fielding Building]]
*[[King's Buildings]]
*[[Renfield Mall]]

*[[Port Seton Quarantine Zone]]
*[[The Toll]]
*[[Holyrood]]
*[[Pentland Hills]]
*[[The Lowlands]]
*[[The Highlands]]
*[[Rosyth]]
*[[Forth Bridges]]

==Transport in the Strange Aeon==
Transport within the Edinburgh districts is limited to foot and mag-lev trams and trains. The confines and air controls of the arcologies make it near impossible to drive motor vehicles, especially older hybrids and petrol-driven cars.

Each Edinburgh district has a large parking area located besides their gates. Although the costs are high it is possible to drive from one district to another. A thriving trade in car rentals (both old petrol and d-engine) has sprung up and many Edinburgh natives enjoy "a drive in the countryside" in their spare time, free of the confines of the Edinburgh Arcologies. The roads and transport channels are surrounded on both sides by large embankments - so most Edinburgh residents do not have to look at the bombed-out ruins as they commute between the districts. In heavy rain, these channels have been known to flood.

Although most avoid travelling too far from the city, some foolhardy individuals have been known to drive to Glasgow, although the roads are in a poor state of repair (a mag-lev train links Glasgow and Edinburgh), with the exception of those that lead to the airports.

Air travel is the proviso of the wealthy and powerful - most long-haul flights require a military escort, and commercial airlines all route through mainland Europe. The [[Migou]] presence at the Poles, and [[Esoteric Order of Dagon]] activity in the oceans make travel risky at the best of times. In the Far East and Eastern Europe, the [[Rapine Storm]] forces field enough flying horrors to make air travel through there near-impossible.

==The Arcane Underground in Edinburgh==
With the passing of the Hopkins Act, the Arcane Underground in Edinburgh (and the UK) is effectively fragmented into small cells who distrust outsiders. Obviously this makes things difficult for the [[Eldritch Society]], who have to keep one step ahead of the OIS and GIA who see them as dangerous cultists as well. The Beltane incident legitimised the Eldritch society to Edinburgh law enforcement to a certain degree, but there's no "special relationship".

Tager packs in the UK are very much "on the road" most of the time. They have to keep moving in case Chrysalis Corp (or the NEG OIS) identifies them from previous operations. Communication amongst society members is very much dead-letter drops and cold-war style espionage.

The lack of arcane magic users among the society's ranks in the UK has been a cause for concern for sometime among the Eldritch Society leadership.

=History=
*2024: David Wilkinson, a happily married father of three, and an office worker at the Scottish Parliament with no history of criminality or mental illness calmly walks into the Parliament chamber and detonates a home-made bomb, demolishing the structure, and killing over 400 people in the blast. Forensic scientists are baffled at three unknown elements found in the bomb fragments. The [[NUN]] orders the transfer of Scottish government to Edinburgh Castle.

*2033: Research into [[D-engine technology]] at Cockenzie Power station goes badly wrong. A attempt to bring the power grid online using D-Engine technology results in a rift that swallows Port Seton and results in the area being quarantined by NEG forces. No one goes there any more.

*2030-2045: A marked rise in psychosis and criminality in East Lothian residents cause the Seton Quarantine zone to be expanded. A large number of people disappear in the area before the zone is secured.

*2046: The oil rigs of the North Sea are mothballed. The former Rosyth and Loch Fine naval bases are brought back online as [[NEG]] Naval bases.

*2048: The Granton [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcology Arcology] is the first to be built in Edinburgh.

*2055: An unknown agency infiltrates the Beltane fire festival society. Only quick thinking by the [[GIA]] and [[Eldritch Society]] members prevent a catastrophe. The [[NEG]] pass the Hopkins Act, which makes any kind of neo-pagan or cult activity illegal without a permit.

*2056: Protests against the Hopkins Act result in riots as the [[NEG]] deploy violent force to control the streets during the Edinburgh Festival.

*2057: [[Esoteric Order of Dagon]] forces attempt to establish a foothold in the Western Isles. They fail, and their underwater city of G'llho is believed destroyed by NEG forces, fielding [[Mecha]] for the first time.

*2060-2063: Edinburgh is plagued by a serial killer. The identity of "the Handyman" is never discovered.

*2063: [[Nazzadi]] and [[Migou]] bombings during the [[Arcanotech Wars]] destroy much of the city's landmarks, including the Scott Monument and Holyrood house.

*2079: The famed Nazzadi artist, Tanyla, is killed in reprisal for the Arcanotech wars, during an exhibition of her work at the Edinburgh Festival. Her killer, Julie Milne, is later found to be suffering [[Aeon War Syndrome]].

*2080: An outbreak of Enhanced Tuberculosis (ETB) causes a part of Leith's Shore district to be quarantined. A fire later sweeps through the tenement blocks concerned and is blamed on a ruptured oxygen tank. No bodies are ever found.

*2081: The Handyman killings resume.

*2085: Rosyth Naval base receives their first [[Engels]]; three Hamshalls.

Nihon is an all-encompassing D&D-genre campaign, covering a huge range of cultures and settings and using an original rule set devised by Vince Fitzpatrick. It has been running since 1999. While many starting settings are possible, the one currently being run in Edinburgh is located in a fantasy version of medieval Japan. Flexible and highly-playable, it features a free-form magic system, large-scale battle system, plus rules for weather, fatigue, morale and other aspects often missing from commercial games like D&D 5e.

== CAMPAIGN BACKGROUND ==

First page of a tattered journal:

"...The Border Princes have never been the most hospitable of regions but now, with orcs pillaging the countryside, skaven infiltrating cities, life has never been more difficult. War isn't good for normal people. Never was. Lives lost. Families broken. Rampaging poverty and disease. It was a time of strife, when brother fought brother for a piece of bread. But this is not a story of suffering and hunger and death.

It is a tale of a group that decided to cry out against fate, rather than bow their heads and succumb. It is a story of a band of individuals that would have never worked together in time of peace. It is a testament of how a motley band rises to the challenge of heroic feats - because they have to.

It is a story of times when the die of fate are cast by the gods, when the gods watch, interfere and cheat..."

== FEW CHANGES IN THE SETTING ==

'''MONEY'''

If you have gold, you are rich. I mean it. One gold crown will be enough to sleep, eat and sparingly drink in an average tavern/pub/guesthouse for a MONTH. Don't get me started on precious stones. Oooooft.
All prices have been reworked to reflect that

1 gc(golden crown) = 20ss(silver shillings) = 400cp (copper pence)

'''DEITIES & RELIGION'''

There will be a few new deities to choose from. Oh, and try and not piss them off. They are fickle and vengeful, but sometimes will grant you boons. Boons are granted to people who follow the tenets of their faith, make offerings and pray.

== CHANGES IN GAMEPLAY MECHANICS ==

Just forget what you learned from the books, apart from the d100 rolls. Forget the professions - know who you want your character to be:

Warriors / Fighters : They are limited by weapon proficiencies, but there are "maneouvers" that expand them quite nicely. They are for warriors what magic spells are for spellcasters

Thieves / Assassins : They are considerably more badass and will have the skills / equipment to f*ck people up badly. Stealth, poisons, bombs, smokescreens, disguises - what have you.

Priests : They have considerable sway over people of their religion and are limited spellcasters. Warrior priests are not uncommon.

Spellcasters : Please consider them mainly as mobile artillery in a fight - kind of glass cannons.

Anything in between is cool as long as you have an idea...

== NOTABLE PLACES ==

'''Alvinion:'''
Alvinion is a flying castle, which one can enter through a portal located in a rock outcropping smack in the middle of the Border Princes. Beware they, who try to come in uninvited. It is ruled by consensus by six lords (one of which is Lord Keldon von Richthoffen, while the others' identities remain unknown), residing mostly in the six towers of the castle. It is sparsely populated with individuals hand-picked and invited to live and work there. There are no taxes per se, but everyone has to contribute where needed. All residents are subject to 2 laws: that the lords' word is law, and everyone is to show respect to everyone else (if at least for the fact that offending a lord can and will end in any of the following: flogging, torture, execution or what is called Deathjump)

== NOTABLE PEOPLE ==

'''Lord Keldon von Richthoffen:'''
One of the six lords of Alvinion (more commonly known as The Goddamn Flying Castle). Skilled in the art of warfare, politics and subterfuge. He holds absolute power in the castle, unless contested by any of the other lords (whose identities are currently unknown). Sometimes introduces himself as The Corporal - the rank with which he ended regular military service years ago. Has a particular dislike of mages and elves (one named Len in particular) - the source of which seem to stem from past experiences rather than common racial bias (he IS biased now). He is the face of Alvinion in "foreign" relations as well as recruitment. It has recently been revealed by The Storyteller that he keeps his religious beliefs and practices to himself.

'''Thagrim Ironbeard:'''
The resident blacksmith and quartermaster. Known for his short (even for a dwarf) temper, fondness of mechanical contraptions and drink. Oh and as most Dwarves he dislikes elves.

'''Shila:'''
The resident healer. She keeps a decent library of tomes on medicine, biology, chemistry and monsters. Also runs the infirmary. She seems a bit cold and lacking in bedside manner, but no-one doubts her skill.

'''Wilhelm Tratter:'''
Resident carpenter and woodworker. Mostly keeps to himself in his workshop.

'''"Mage":'''
There is a resident mage in the castle.

'''"Marius von Bohenwald":'''
Merchant who turned out to be a Witchhunter, inconveniencing players at one point. I has become apparent later on, that he is, in fact, leader of an Assassins' Guild cell, and has since been employed by the lords of Alvinion.

'''The Storyteller:'''
A man in his 50s, with greying hair. He travels and trades real stories, one for one. He seems to have an uncanny ability to see through deception and lies. When asked for a story, he reads from The Book of Proverbs, which he carries on his person at all times. He claims to have met an elf named Len many years ago (more than his age would suggest), as well as a man named Keldon.

'''The Free Company of Nuln:'''
A six man strong mercenary band, rumored to be around since a century and a half ago. They never take on new members. The only exception being when one of them dies or retires, they find someone looking alike and train him to join. They are led by a man named Aaron Gallowglass, who rides a giant wolf into combat. There are some dwarves who claim to have met the men 150 years ago during The Great Siege of Karak and claim they are the same people still. It is obviously rubbish, since no human lives that long, but dwarves kind of forget that (and since the men claiming this are short, bearded and carry axes - no one tells them that).

=Ammut’s Womb=

Ammut’s Womb is the name of the delta marking where the Sanjin empties into the Western Sea. The trees grow to towering sizes there, and there are several layers of eco-system exist. Monstrous versions of animals are also found here – some of which can threaten nearby ships on the coast - along with a number of varieties of carnivorous vegetation. No modern Hykarian would willingly live there, but there are rumours of tribes of primitives living deep within, not to mention those who wish to evade scrutiny or the law.

=Black Pyramid=

The tomb of the Black Pharaoh, He Who is Not Named, towers above the Blood Waste, dominating the horizon for miles. Mortared with the blood and bones of the Hykarian slaves, the edifice is thousands of years old. The top of the of the pyramid appears to be flat, with what looks like a piece of solid obsidian acting as a capstone. The Old Hykarians venerated the Black Pharaoh until their fall, possibly worshipping him too, but no history of the Pharaoh exists. Perhaps for a very good reason.

=Blood Waste=

The red coloured stones of the desert where once believed to be the blood of the slaves that toiled in the once verdant land of Old Hykaria. Now it is a barren wasteland, where savage creatures live and the desert nomads cross at great risk. The nomads are a hardy bunch, savage and unforgiving – some are rumoured to be cannibals – and anyone crossing the desert is fair game. It is believed that they were cast out from the Forbidden City for some transgression, doomed to wander the Blood Waste for eternity. Nonetheless, they have adapted and nare

=Chasm of N’gai=

The black rift cuts across the landscape. The crevasse floor never sees the daylight sun, and tunnels worm their way through the rock. There are obvious signs that these tunnels were constructed but their purpose and their builders remain unknown. The deepest cavern floors are littered with strange blue crystals, and local nomads consider it a rite of passage to venture there and retrieve one. Some return, others do not. Even then, sometimes the young nomad will babble of “living darkness” and beg for death.

=City of Nitocris, the City of the Dead=

Named for the Queen who built the first tomb, this necropolis is vast. Used by the Old Hykarians to honour their dead, it is largely shunned in modern times. Most of the tombs have been picked clean by grave robbers, but the sands regularly reveal new wonders – and horrors. The Hykarian dead do not sleep quietly and many would-be thieves seeking easy pickings do not return.

=Mountains of the Moon=

The central mountain range of Hykaria is the ancestral home of the nomads and is believed to house the Forbidden City. It was from here that the nomads were driven out 2,000 years ago and is now taboo. The terrain is inhospitable, steep-sided valleys and narrow passes confusing even the most dedicated cartographer. It is believed that there is only one path to the Forbidden City: many have tried to find it, but few return.

=Plain of Bones=

In old Hykaria, slaves that were no longer of viable use (as workers or raw material), or who somehow displeased their masters, were sent to the Plain of Bones to die. Their legs were broken and the merciless sun allowed to take its toll. Their bones litter the desert, along with those of larger beasts from Ammut’s Womb that have fallen foul of magical wards set long ago by Old Hykaria.

=Sarnac=

The capital of Hykaria, Sarnac is really two cities: the relatively modern Western bank of the river is ruled by the Council of Thirteen, rich lords who control much of the trade and income, and the Eastern bank, the Dead city (see below). The city is at the mercy of the ''Crimson Sha'in'', an occult sandstorm of magic that requires the city to employ magical wards to repel. Some have whispered that the storm is the spirits of the Old Hykarians, and talk of “voices on the wind”. Much of the city is a tent bazaar but bigger structures of up to five storeys exist.

=River Sanjin=

Once “blessed” by the Old Hykarians with the blood of 12 virgins every flood time, the reddish tint of the Sanjin is all evident. The water itself is rich in minerals and most of the Hykarian foodstuffs are grown on its banks. It floods every year when the first Monsoon rains land on Nilambur, but a complicated irrigation structure allows for this.

=The Dead City =

Technically Old Sarnac, the Dead City is very much Old Hykaria. Buried by the sands a hundred years ago, the fate of the cruel Hykarian sorcerer-nobility remains unknown, but their legacy remains. The City ruins are awash with wealth and occult knowledge, but there are significant risks: some are still guarded, and Hykarian wards are as efficient now as they were a century ago. The Council of Thirteen constantly send expeditions here, to either seize a site or to stymie their rivals. Notably, there are a large number of obsidian obelisks scattered around the city. Called the Silent Sentinels, these markers are covered in a similar script to the Black Pyramid, and it is rumoured that, at certain times of the year, looking within will show images of Old Hykaria.

'''Welcome to ORC!''' You may need to be registered and logged in to view some areas.
If you're player looking for a group, please use the Inevitable Introduction Thread (http://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/introductions/13944-the-inevitable-introduction-thread) if you're new to the site and just want to say hello. That way you're posting in an established thread, and it helps to cross posting.
If you're a GM looking for players - either for an existing group, or looking to form one, please post in http://orcedinburgh.co.uk/forum/looking-to-run-a-game. This area of the forum is for ORC members to gauge interest in games whether they be one-shots or campaigns, as GMs. So, if you've got a game you want to run, post it here.
Please don't post anything like mobile or email addresses, dropbox links, etc. as this area is searchable by the 'net and general public!

As GMs and players, you can promote ORC by word-of-mouth to other societies or to existing GMs/players. If you're a GM looking for players, check here first - contact prospective players rather than waiting on them. You can also contact prospective players through the LookingforGame distribution list in the PM system. Send a PM to the LookingforGame list (ORC Messaging -> Compose -> Contacts drop-down list). Give it a few weeks and make sure you start a relevant forum thread and mention it in the PM!

Can people PLEASE let Bill know if there are any games planned for ORC that AREN'T listed on the site. If we have games scheduled without them being 'published' on the site then it can make things harder for us to know where the gaps are and indeed if we have games planned. GMs, remember that if you are intending to run a game, please make sure that you put it up on the calendars, especially if you're looking for players. ORC Edinburgh also has a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/orcedinburgh).

It also functions as a "booking slot" to a certain extent as well - remember that we have finite space at some venues.

Most games at ORC are fortnightly, so consider following a similar format if you are new to ORC or running a game. As a GM, you may want to consider 4 players the minimum for running a game initially too. It's best to run a couple of sessions first to see how your group may play together, rather than launching into a massive campaign with an unknown group.

We also have a wiki area (http://www.orcedinburgh.co.uk/wiki), based on Wikipedia's MediaWiki software, with a lot of functionality built-in for GMs and players to use for settings, houserules, NPCs, and the like. Send Bill a PM if you'd like to use it for games.

If you know of any games that are planned for this weekend or any other weekend either PM Bill or submit the event yourself and he'll do the tidying up.

Some basic guidance to using the site:

# The Introductions area of the Forum will be purged of messages over a year old.
# The Games/Players Wanted area of the Forum will be purged of messages over a year old - this means that there won't be quite so much clutter and keeps things relatively current!
# The Trades/Sales/Wants area of the Forum will be purged of messages over a year old.
# Some posts may be moved to the relevant area if they are out of date or relevant.

Note that you can:

* Subscribe to a thread so that you'll get an email every time someone posts in that thread (or unsubscribe if necessary).
* Add a Thread as Favorite, so that it is "bookmarked" for you in the ORC forum.
* Export a Forum thread to a no-frills PDF file by using the Forum Tools.
* Change your profile avatar and password at https://orcedinburgh.co.uk/kunena/profile. Choose Edit. You can reset your password in the User Account tab.
===Enemy Forces===
Castle Karlstein houses a full company of ''Heer'' forces, approximately 130 men, plus a detachment of 10 SS troopers.

The company comprises three ''Züge'', or platoons, each of which is commanded by a junior officer (usually a Leutnant or lieutenant), and is made up of 4 10-man infantry squads, or ''Gruppen''. Each squad (''Gruppe'') is made up of a squad leader and deputy squad leader (often NCOs), a 3-man machine gun “''Trup''”, and a 5-man rifle “''Trup''”. A command and support staff of 10 men complete the company. Apparently the Black Sun contingent are headed up by '''Herr Doktor Graf Ernst von Kammerstein'''.

The SS detachment comprises 10 troopers plus one commanding officer — '''Obersturmführer Heinrich Schlachter'''.

At any one time, one platoon of 40 men is guarding the castle or down in the surrounding villages on guard and patrol duty, and two platoons (80 men) are off duty or asleep. This means there are as many as 100 ''Heer'' soldiers in the castle.
==Commanding Officer’s Briefing==
===Section-7 Report:===
[[File:Nieuport.png|thumbnail]]

Since the 10th of May the overwhelming attack by German armed forces has
placed the B.E.F. (“British Expeditionary Force”) and our French and Belgian
allies in a dangerously precarious situation. Faced with the possibility
of total loss of B.E.F. forces, the Admiralty has today announced OPERATION
DYNAMO, the complete evacuation of the B.E.F. and whatever Allied forces can be
accommodated by sea to south-east England.

Furious fighting is raging in Northern France and Belgium, and the B.E.F.
and Allied forces are retreating to the French port of DUNKIRK (“DUNKERQUE”).
The aim is to evacuate more than 300,000 armed forces personnel before the
entire region falls to the Germans, a result which we believe is now only a
matter of time.

DUNKIRK itself has been heavily bombed. Evacuations are to be made by
ship from the 17 1/2 mile stretch of beaches between DUNKIRK and the town of
NIEUPORT. A bridgehead has been established, some 5 miles deep, between the
two towns, for the regrouping of B.E.F. and Allied forces. A shrinking pocket
exists to the south of the bridgehead, funnelling retreating B.E.F. and Allied
forces. Beset on all sides by overwhelming German forces, British and Allied
forces are suffering heavy losses in order to make time for our troops to
withdraw.

The DUNKIRK area comprises low-lying coastal plains, comprising sand
dunes giving way to agricultural lands criss-crossed by drainage canals. The
terrain is not considered favourable to armour, and roads are raised above the
surrounding plains and flanked by drainage ditches, making traffic using them
easily visible.

===Section VIII Report:===
Belgian forces are crumbling and the surrender of King Leopold is expected
imminently. Communications on the ground are difficult, and it is unclear
if the French command under General BLANCHARD appreciate the full nature of
OPERATION DYNAMO.

Due to the speed of the German advance, there are limited Resistance or
intelligence assets on the ground. The presence of tens of thousands of B.E.F.
troops with inadequate communication and a rapidly changing situation is
expected to provide a chaotic environment.
===Section D Analysis:===
Section D agent Agatha MARCHAM (codename: WOTAN) has made a recent
transmission from what is now German territory in the combat zone. She has
reported the existence of a secret operation named FALL NADEL (“Operation
Needle”) by a German S.S. SONDERGRUPPE (“Special Group of the S.S.”) under the
aegis of Heinrich HIMMLER, designed to thwart OPERATION DYNAMO. WOTAN is tasked
with gathering information relating to activities pursuant to OPERATION THREE
KINGS in the area of Castle Karlstein last year: it is unknown precisely what
FALL NADEL refers to or what other information WOTAN has received. WOTAN was
attempting to return to the B.E.F. occupation zone but has been stranded behind
enemy lines by the speed of the German advance. Her last known position (radio
transmission) was the village of MESEGEN. Recent attempts to retake MESEGEN
have failed.

London station considers WOTAN’s information to be highly sensitive and
critical to the success of OPERATION DYNAMO. Authorisation is given to take
command of an appropriate unit of 3rd Grenadier Guards and penetrate enemy
lines to make contact with WOTAN and discover the goals and nature of OPERATION NEEDLE.
Locals believe it haunted, and report hearing maniacal laughter from within the keeps' depths. Some foolhardy souls make wagers to spend the night within, and sometimes they do not return from the blackened chambers of this ruin.

Bill: /* Links */

For basic details on how to format text in the ORC wiki, please see [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Wikitext here]. To see an example page, see the [[ORC_Wiki_Template]].
=Content=
*Assign a Category or Categories to each page you create - this should be the name of the campaign e.g. <pre>Category: New World</pre>. You can view a list of available categories at [[Special:Categories]] or you can create your own by entering <pre>Category: Your choice</pre> at the top of the page. When you edit a page, a list of categories will also be displayed.
*Check your spelling and grammar and make sure others can read what you type, or you may find your content being edited by them!
*Try and create content-rich pages rather than stubs (where there is only a sentence or so).
*Don't create page links unnecessarily - especially if they go nowhere. Only create links when you need them. The website admin frequently checks for, and may remove, dead links.
*Leave a blank line between each paragraph.
*If you create the wiki entry in another product, preview the entry in the wiki before submitting.
*Make sure that any links you create actually work!
*Use meta tags to describe your page content - mention the game and some of the background but try and keep it to 256 characters or less
<pre><metadesc>A description of your campaign</metadesc></pre>
*Create unique game-specific pages. Consider other users of the wiki - dont create a page called Players or RPG campaign for something. Admins may rename a page and link if it isn't specific enough.

=Headings=
You can create headings using the "=" symbols e.g.
<pre>
=Heading 1=
==Heading 2==
===Heading 3=== etc.</pre>
The heading below is Heading 2.

=Uploading Files=
You can only upload image files at this point in time. Allowed filetypes are .png .gif .jpg, .fcw, and .jpeg. If you want to add other files please use the [http://www.orcedinburgh.co.uk/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=68 ORC Downloads page], then add a link.

You'll need to upload the files first using [[Special:Upload]], then point to that file in your wiki page e.g.

<nowiki>[[File:File.jpg]]</nowiki>

=Links=
*Links are case sensitive - creating a link using the <nowiki>[[ ]]</nowiki> brackets, means that links called <nowiki>[[Ashes of Freedom]]</nowiki> and <nowiki>[[ashes of freedom]]</nowiki> are two separate links!
*Links in red point to pages that have not been created yet. Always check your spelling.
*Links in blue point to existing pages.
*Hyperlinks to other pages outside the wiki should be enclosed in <nowiki>[ ]</nowiki> not <nowiki>[[ ]]</nowiki> e.g. a link to Bill's website called <nowiki>http://www.themandragora.com</nowiki> is written as <nowiki>[http://www.themandragora.com Bills website]</nowiki> and appears as [http://www.themandragora.com Bills website]

=Tables=
Tables are a bit tricky to set up at first, but you can create them using the Advanced option in the Editor.

=User: Pages=
When you create your first page it will also create a User Page for you. It's up to you whether you use this or not - see [[User Pages]].

The Zhentarim is an unscrupulous shadow network
that seeks to expand its influence and power throughout
Faerûn. The organization is ambitious, opportunistic,
and meritocratic. Rogues and warlocks of neutral and/or evil alignments are commonly drawn to the Zhentarim.
==Goals==
*Amass wealth.
*Look for opportunities to seize power.
*Gain influence over important people and organizations.
*Dominate Faerûn.
==Beliefs==
*The Zhentarim is your family. You watch out for it, and it watches out for you.
*You are the master of your own destiny. Never be less than what you deserve to be.
*Everything —and everyone— has a price.
==Member Traits==
A member of the Zhentarim thinks of himself or herself
as a member of a large family, and relies on the Black
Network for resources and security. However, members
are granted enough autonomy to pursue their own
interests and gain some measure of personal power
or influence. The Black Network is a meritocracy. As
a whole, it promises "the best of the best," although in
truth, the Zhentarim is more interested in spreading
its own propaganda and influence than investing in the
improvement of its individual members.

The Lords’ Alliance is a loose coalition of established
political powers concerned with mutual security and
prosperity. The organization is aggressive, militant, and
political. Fighters and sorcerers of lawful or neutral
alignments are commonly drawn to the Lords’ Alliance.
==Goals==
*Ensure the safety and prosperity of cities and other settlements of Faerûn.
*Maintain a strong coalition against the forces of disorder.
*Pro-actively eliminate threats to the established powers.
*Bring honor and glory to one’s leaders and one’s homeland.
==Beliefs==
*If civilization is to survive, all must unite against the dark forces that threaten it.
*Fight for your realm. Only you can bring honor, glory, and prosperity to your lord and homeland.
*Don’t wait for the enemy to come to you. The best defense is a strong offense.
==Member Traits==
In order to seek out and destroy threats to their
homelands, agents of the Lords’ Alliance must be highly
trained at what they do. Few can match their skills in
the field. They fight for the glory and the security of
their people and for the lords who rule over them, and
they do so with pride. However, the Lords’ Alliance
can only survive if its members “play nice” with one
another, which requires a certain measure of diplomacy.
Rogue agents within the Lords’ Alliance are rare, but
defections have been known to occur.

The Emerald Enclave is a widespread group of
wilderness survivalists who preserve the natural order
while rooting out unnatural threats. The organization
is decentralized, hardy, and reclusive. Barbarians,
druids, and rangers of good or neutral alignments are
commonly drawn to the Emerald Enclave.
==Goals==
*Restore and preserve the natural order.
*Destroy all that is unnatural.
*Keep the elemental forces of the world in check.
*Keep civilization and the wilderness from destroying each other.
==Beliefs==
*The natural order must be respected and preserved.
*Forces that upset the natural order must be destroyed.
*Civilization and the wilderness must learn to coexist peacefully.
==Member Traits==
Members of the Emerald Enclave are spread far and
wide, and usually operate in isolation. They learn to
depend on themselves more than others. Survival in a
harsh world also demands great fortitude and mastery
of certain fighting and survival skills. Members of the
Enclave who dedicate themselves to helping others
survive the perils of the wilderness are more social than
others who are charged with defending sacred glades
and preserving the natural balance.

The Order of the Gauntlet is composed of faithful and vigilant seekers of justice who protect others from the depredations of evildoers. The organization is honorable, vigilant, and zealous. Clerics, monks, and paladins of good (and often lawful good) alignments are commonly drawn to the Order of the Gauntlet.

==Goals==
*Be armed and vigilant against evil.
*Identify evil threats such as secretive power groups and inherently evil creatures.
*Enforce justice.
*Enact retribution against evil actions—do not strike pre-emptively.
==Beliefs==
*Faith is the greatest weapon against evil—faith in one’s god, one’s friends, and one’s self.
*Battling evil is an extraordinary task that requires extraordinary strength and bravery.
*Punishing an evil act is just. Punishing an evil thought is not.
==Member Traits==
The Order of the Gauntlet is a dedicated, tightly knit group of like-minded individuals driven by religious zeal or a finely honed sense of justice and honor. Friendship and camaraderie are important to members of the order, and they share a trust and a bond normally reserved for siblings. Like highly motivated soldiers, members of the Order of the Gauntlet seek to become the best at what they do and look forward to testing their mettle. There are few, if any, “lone wolves” in this organization.

The Harpers is a scattered network of spellcasters and spies who advocate equality and covertly oppose the abuse of power. The organization is benevolent, knowledgeable, and secretive. Bards and wizards of good alignments are commonly drawn to the Harpers.
==Goals==
*Gather information throughout Faerûn.
*Promote fairness and equality by covert means.
*Thwart tyrants and leaders, governments, and organizations that grow too powerful.
*Aid the weak, poor and oppressed.
==Beliefs==
*One can never have too much information or arcane knowledge.
*Too much power leads to corruption. The abuse of magic, in particular, must be closely monitored.
* No one should be powerless.
==Member Traits==
Harper agents are trained to act alone and rely on their own resources. When they get into scrapes, they don’t count on their fellow Harpers to rescue them. Nevertheless, Harpers are dedicated to helping one
another in times of need, and friendships between Harpers are nigh unbreakable. Masterful spies and infiltrators, they use various guises and secret identities to form relationships, cultivate their information networks, and manipulate others into doing what needs to be done. Although most Harpers prefer to operate in the shadows, there are exceptions.

=House Rules=
Various house rules for the game.

==Min30==
To allow players some flexibility in choosing their classes (if not their careers).
#You choose your race, most of of you will be Human.
#You randomly generate your stats in order. These scores cannot be switched. If you want to reroll any bad stat you do the whole lot.
#Depending on your stats you can choose a class. The classes are Warrior, Ranger, Rogue, and Academic. CAVEAT: if you want to play a specific class, you may substitute the minimum required for the relevant stat as follows (I'm calling it the Min30 rule).
##Warriors - replace their generated WS score with a minimum of 30.
##Rangers - replace their generated BS score with a minimum of 30.
##Rogue - replace their generated I score with a minimum of 30. Elves do not automatically get the I 65 needed - they must roll that naturally!
##Academics - replace their generated Int and WP score with a minimum of 30.
#These scores cannot be switched around so once you've applied the Min30 rules: that's it.
#The basic CharGen rules apply as normal for career generation, i.e. randomly roll for your starting careers and skills. Note that most class exits may allow you to follow specific careers.

==Elf Psychology==
Elves are somewhat overpowered in the WFRP 1e. To balance this, Elves start with mild Claustrophobia and Agoraphobia, plus d6 appropriate Insanities.

==Damage==
The WFRP rules state that you roll 1d6 and add S to the basic damage roll. However, the new damage house rules state the following:

Damage is calculated by rolling a 1d10 and adding Strength. The defender rolls 1d6 and adds their Toughness. Any Armour reduces the damage further.

The party arrive in the City of the White Wolf.

=Day 0=
Right, the party finally entered [[Middenheim]], after being gouged for taxes upon entry (with Stefan copping a Scroll Tax too). Their weapons have also been secured at the South Gate (with the exception of a dagger or two). The group headed to The Templars Arms (area 43 on the map in the Geldmund Commercial district (see here www.orcedinburgh.co.uk/wiki/Middenheim). Ilsa and Giacomo bouth bought meat pies which saw them largely confined to the privy for the day...

The rest of the group headed to the Palace and delivered their letter to Kirsten Jung and her neices, and met with two individuals:
Dieter Scheimedehammer, the Graf's champion (Kirsten's fiance) and Rallane Lafarel (an Elf), Court Minstrel. Both greeted the PCs warmly and had them stay for a drink.
On the subject of the taxes, Dieter seemed to respond in a near monotone, especially when talking about the Dwarf tax. Some of the group suspect he has been hypnotised or compelled in some way.
Lafarel, while quite happy about the Dwarf tax, resents the fact that the city's Dwarves blame him for it - they're constantly saying that it was his idea. It wasn't. He believes it was Chancellor Josef Sparsam's.

The group returns to the Templars Arms, with the intention of meeting the Kirsten's party later at the Laughing Jackass (a restaurant/cabaret/bar). Giacomo and Ilsa are still unavailable obviously. The place is lively, busy and a number of satircal pieces are taking place. An impressionist is on stage as they arrive, singing an onviously popular song:

<poem>I'm Gruber Goebbels,
How do you (''the audience "whoop-whoop"s'')
I swindle all the merchants (''the audience "whoop-whoop"s'')
And I'm hear to cheat you too..."
</poem>

There was also a satirical piece showing a doddering Graf Boris Todbringer (audience booes when he falls over), his heir (a palsied and drooling) Baron 'Shaking' Stefan Todbringer, and of course Baron Heinrich, who waves from the wings. 'Princess' Katarina is reading poetry (upside down) whilst around them a heavily padded Tilean caricature dances around. "Herr Doktor" Luigi Pavorotti sprinkles glitter on the recumbent Stefan who then gets up and makes rude gestures to the crowd, and tries to dance with his father.

The audience laughs uproariously, none more than "Herr Doktor" Luigi Pavorotti! He himself is in the audience, a larger than life individual who enjoys wine, women and song (sometimes in abundance). As well as being something of a lech, he happily regales the party of life on the high seas as a Tilean Entrepreneur (possibly a pirate). He doesn't have any opinion on the taxes, but reckons Chancellor Josef Sparsam must have had help from the three Law lords (Reiner Ehrlich, Joachim Hoflich, Karl-Heniz Weismier) to ratify the tax laws.

As the group returns to The Templar's Arms the streets are already festooned with carnival finery, and there's an air of anticipation. Even as this late hour preparations are still taking place. Tomorrow is the Carnival - one that all Middenehimers will never forget!

=Day 1=
As told by Priscilla (Captain Orion)
“Hmm..... You want to hear more of my adventures do you? I don't know. My sister doesn’t want me telling you these stories you know…”
The child takes a deep breath for forthcoming histrionics of apocalyptic proportions.
“Fine, fine. Come here - and not a word to your mother about this, or she will kill me.”

Priscilla picks up the child and puts her onto her knee.
“Now, what story do I tell you? Have I ever told you about the time I met a prince of Athel Loren? No? Well, my story starts in an human city called Middenheim, a great stone behemoth settled on a great pillar of rock about three hundred foot tall - a wonder to see, and a pain to get into; but that's got nothing to do with this story so I'll skip that.

“What? Yes Johann, Ilsa and the others were with me as well. I know how much you like to hear about the antics my friends and I get into! Now let me get on telling this story and finish it before your mother get home. Now where was I...? Well, it was the first day of the carnival and we all went see the Challenges to the Champion Dieter Schmeidehammer… Who's Dieter? He was the Graf's champion and skilled he was, easily took on all challengers and won: even took on Giacomo. Giacomo need a bit of persuasion to get in the ring with Dieter in the form of a push in the back but in the end the two went at it! With the first left hook into his face, Giacomo was sent flying back onto his back and was out cold. We never did let him forget about it. We did a little socializing and got little tip bits about town.

“Well, the show ended and we all spit up and went our own way to different activities. Ilsa and our new friend Klaus went off to do a bit of Archery, I heard that they both did well. Well, they at least hit something, I think it was a one cat, a dog, one pigeon, and a chicken - and I think Ilsa did most of that.

“As for Stefan, he went away to get drunk at the Fine Ales Festival and got in to some mischief with a high-ranking member of the Merchant guild. I recall something about getting him drunk and using his magic to put him to sleep; I don't remember too much about that. All I know is that he got on the wrong side of the guard and so were going to keep an eye on him.

“What was I doing? Well, I was at Elven Gymnasts Event and what a fantastic event it was! There was tumbling in the air, swinging from one places to an another;, it was a great dance a hundred feet about the crowd with nothing to stop them falling to the ground but their skill. One day I'll take you and your mother to see this; it something to be seen to truly know it's beauty. After the show I ran into a Rallane Lafarel; and he was from Athel Loren.

“Yes, yes, he was the Prince. Now, Rallane was an idiot: he spoke in the oddest Old Worlder I’ve ever heard; it had a lot of “Dudes” and “Wow” in it. He said he learned it up north from a human on a beach. Anyway, I got in a conversation with him and that were I found out he was a prince. Now I was shocked to learn this; one of our noble-born was this man. Well, I quickly made friends with him. One thing you should know always make friends with important people even if they’re idiots. It is always useful to have someone like that on your side when things go wrong and sometime you learn to like them, but anyway.
“One great thing was he introduced me to the gymnasts: they looked impressive in the air but even more so in person, powerful bodies and they all looked battle-hardened. It turns out they were Wardancers, of all things and that they came here on Rallane’s request! When you get someone that can request Wardancers to put on a show in a human city; then you know he’s someone very important. But sadly I had to go, as I was going to meet the others at the Minotaur fights.

“No, I did not fight it. Fighting a Minotaur is something you try not to do. Anyways, it was a small one and not that strong-looking. Gladiators would take it on: when you look at them the Minotaur looks the better fighter than the humans, being much bigger. Don't let looks fool you - just because someone looks weak does not mean they are. I’ve learned that one the hard way many a time on my travels.
“Well, this little Gladiator was fast - real fast - dancing around the Minotaur’s blows and landing small blows of his own, slowly wearing the Minotaur down. And then, in a blink of the eye, he stuck a hard blow and down it went, flat on its back. Minotaur are hard beasts to take down and he did it in minutes. Very impressive feat it was. That all happened in just the first half of the day, so we had a bit of time before the next event started. So we ... “

A terse Elven voice cuts across Priscilla.
“You know you’re not a very good influence on little Prisc there! I leave you alone and you’re telling my child these gruesome stories! Well, you may as well finish it - and before you ask, I’ve been here from the start. So, tell us more about this Prince of yours!”

Embarrassed for failing to notice her sister being there from the outset, Priscilla clears her throat.
“Well, you better take a seat; there’s still six and a half days to recount before I'm done. So, where was I? That's right. And so we......”

=Day 2 & Day 3=
The party spent much of their time hob-nobbing with the locals and getting a taste for life in the big city

Charlotte, the mysterious woman who hypnotised Dieter? Grom's latest literary creation which looks surprising familiar - with regards to a shapechanging demon, heist, a murder, a chase through the streets and fire? Ar-Ulric's interst in Emmanuelle Schlagen, the Graf's Paramour (that's going to get messy)? Herr Doctor's interest in Priscilla? Sparsam's weird behaviour? A possible coach chase? Goebbel's roles in all this? And will Kirsten talk to any of you ever again?....

Kyle Schmidt recalls the events "As far as I recall, we were investigating the red-headed green eyed woman, her possible connection to Sparsam, planning to talk to him.

Also Karl woke up in the party after a hard, hard night with chainmail links in his hair, tried to help Kirsten's relationship, afterwards got the Dude to get the Knights Panther incredibly drunk, dragged his dwarven Grudge Band to the beer tent, and a 5-way fight broke between Dwarf Grudge Musicians, Elven Wardancers, Guards, Knight Panther and the party. Afterwards we got the Grand Champion clean and sober both outside and inside and sent him home.

Can't recall what happened afterwards, but I don't think we'll be going to the beer tent soon."

Johann Koch's recollections are much the same: "I also narrowly avoided being kidnapped by Slanneshi cultists while trailing Wittgenstein. Not by cunning and wiles, but by losing him. And someone *cough* yokel *cough* started a brawl between the Knights panther, the dwarfs and the Merry Band which resulted in beer tents collapsing and all the slates from a nearby rooftop being lost in a freak gust of wind. I blame fracking."
