'''Northern Wastes'''

The area bordering the frost fang mountains to the north. This area sees snow and ice cover it all year round, a few barbaric tribes of humans, dwarves and orcs barely survive in this area. It is rumoured that the great dwarf general Oskar Kirensky found a habitual part of this land and lives there still but all who have tried to locate this oasis have not returned.

'''Frost Fang Mountains'''

The traditional dwarvern homelands. Once home to over a hundred dwarvern cities or thanes many have been overrun and destroyed in the last two centuries by Orc raiders and the remaining cities are often besieged or at war with each other. The ownership of the ruins of the old capital Kaza-na-barak are hotly contested by the remaining dwarf lords and it changes hand every few years.

'''New Dwarf lands'''

This are the areas which have been settled by dwarven refugees from the frost fang mountains. Unlike the traditional drarvern mountain kingdoms this areas consist of foothills and forested areas. The various kingdoms which make up this area are generally on good terms with each other although conflict is not unknown. Many of the newer kingdoms trade with the older kingdoms and human lands to the south. In general dwarves prefer to build their own cities rather than settling previous elven buildings. The eastern and western most kingdoms suffer regular raids from human and orc barbarian tribes.

'''Western Orc Lands'''

A harsh and desolate land spotted with swampy areas. This is the traditional orc homeland before its fall the elven kingdoms kept the border dotted with forts to keep the orcs back but with the decimation of the elven people these forts were overrun and the orcs advanced into previously elven territory. Unlike the human barbarians the orcs are less nomadic and many tribes have settled in ruined elven and dwarvern cities. Conflicts between orc tribes have slowed their expansion but each year the orcs push further east into human and dwarvern lands with no sign of stopping.

'''Eastern Plains'''

A wide grassy area inhabited by human nomads. These people build no cities and spent their whole lives travelling. Like the orcs prior to the conflagration a network of elven forts kept the barbarians out of elvish lands and with their destruction the tribes have spread west. There are some settled human and dwarf towns within this area which pay protection money to a local tribe but most other peoples in these lands and killed on sight. Like the orc tribes to the west the nomads are slowly moving further and further afield. Rumours have recently been heard that a great ruler is attempting to unite the clans into one army to strike out into the wild lands much to the dismay of the neighbouring kingdoms.

'''Wild Lands'''

These lands were once the heart of the elven empire and consists of a mixture of terrain. Much of the area is unclaimed by any race spotted with ruined elven cities. However, all races hold some territory in the area be it human robber barons, orcish tribes, Halfling caravans, elven villages, dwarvern outposts or elven cities preserved by gnomes. All fight for the resources and power these lands can bring leading to a frontier feeling even to areas settled for over a century.

'''Greenburg'''

Normally referred to as 'The last elven city'. Greenburg was once a small provincial town until the conflagration when it was found that an unusually large number of the population was immune to the infection. The town Mayor Drusilla Siannodel turned the town into a refugee camp for the survivors of the plague. One of the few cities in the world to actually feel crowded with over 5000 elves crammed into a town build for about a fifth of that Greenburg is a beacon of hope for the species. However, the nomads of the eastern plains draw closer each year and the city is desperately attempting to ally with surrounding human settlements in order to combat the threat.

'''Corellian'''

Sometimes referred to as the silent city or the city of the dead. During the conflagration the ruler of the city an individual now known as the death lord decided it save his people the only way he could, as the undead. As the conflagration destroyed the bodies of those infected he slew the uninfected among his people and raised them to turn on their kin until none remained alive within the kingdom. The death lord himself is rumoured to be the first of his own victims when he converted himself into a lich. Since that day the deathlord has been content to protect his lands borders and has not expanded his influence although the surrounding human lords dread the day when he changes his mind.

'''New Kingdoms'''

These are the lands originally settled by the refugees fleeing from the fall of the empire of Thray. Now almost 150 years old these lands are generally considered civilised and open warfare between kingdoms is rare although not unknown. The kingdoms often send settlers into the wild lands to claim new resources or living space for their expanding populations.

'''Middle Kingdoms'''

The Middle Kingdoms are the area that was once the empire of Thray. Since the fall many say the land is cursed. Split into hundreds of small kingdoms and city states the land is currently at war. Each lord holds a fragment of the crown and emperor and this seems to give him some control over the form of each land, as the fragments change hand so the land itself changes to suit its new ruler. Each king tries to conquer the others and refourge the completed crown but in 200 years none have gotten close.

'''Barbarian'''

Barbarians are common among the human and orc tribes that lived at the edges of the Elven kingdoms. More civilised warriors who fight based on their rage may also be found among those living in the newer human kingdoms as well as elves and dwarfs who have been disturbed by the fall of their kingdoms.

'''Bard'''

Bards are quite a rare class, they were once common among elves, however, and their continual traveling made them even more likely to be infected by the conflagration than most elves resulting in the fiery death of most of them. The few remaining surviving elf bards often travel to keep communication open between the scattered surviving settlements; gnomes have taken up this role as well and are more likely to be welcomed due to their immunity to the conflagration. Human and dwarf bards are also known in the newly settled lands. Many Halflings work as bards or entertainers as well.

'''Cleric'''

Clerics can be found among all races on the continent. A single pantheon is shared by most races although some may know the gods by different names. Many elves feel that their gods abandoned them to the burning and have moved to druidic religions instead. Only a small number of the faithful are granted magical powers by their deity’s.

'''Druid'''

Druids are often found among the human and orc tribes of the east and west. The scattered Elven settlements may also contain druids.

'''Fighter'''

Fighters are found commonly among all races particularly among the besieged dwarf’s thanes and the barely civilised frontier human kingdoms.

'''Monk'''

Monks are very rare. Originally a common class among elves most of them perished along with the majority of that race. The largest concentration of these martial artists remain in the elven city of Greenberg although some humans, gnomes and Halflings have copied their skills from documents found in fallen elven cities the elf monks look down upon these interlopers in contempt.

'''Paladin'''

Paladins are extremely rare holy warriors. They are most commonly found among the more civilised human kingdoms although some may be sent out to the frontiers to try and keep light and law alive there.

'''Ranger'''

Rangers are probably the most common class found on the continent. Due to the large amount of wilderness area that used to be the elven kingdoms all races find the Rangers skills to be useful in settling new areas and surviving in areas already captured.

'''Rogue'''

Rogues are a common class among gnomes, Halflings, dwarves and elves. They are equally common in civilised and frontier settlements although their operandi may change in different environments from stealth to outright thuggary.

'''Sorcerer'''

Sorcerers are not common in human lands, they were hunted in the old empire. With the fall of the empire the surviving sorcerers fled among the other refugees and are now spread through human lands. Sorcerers are most common among gnomes and Halfling although some elves show innate magic talent as well although few survived the effect their magic had on the burning.

'''Warlocks'''

Warlocks are very rare. Pact magic was most common in the empire of Thray where it was linked to the royal bloodline as the line thinned so did the number of warlocks. With the fall of the empire the number of warlocks has risen within the old Kingdoms but they are almost unknown else where. A few elves accepted other worldly patronage to try and escape the burning, but few survived.

'''Wizard'''

Wizards were extremely common among the elves of the elven kingdoms, however, as magic increased the spread of the conflagration many died and few of the survivors use their magic for fear of reactivating the plague. Humans, dwarves, gnomes and Halflings may have picked up many secrets of magic from the deserted elven towns.

'''Human'''

Humans are probably the most populous race in the known world, their numbers matched only by the Orc tribes of the west. There are three types of humans: -

*The old kingdoms. These are the first lands settled by the refugees from the empire of Thray and are thus each approximately 200 years old. Most are considered civilised places and although conflict is common a war of words is more common than conflict between armies.
*The wild lands. These are the more recently settled lands, varying between those settled by the old kingdoms almost 2 centuries ago to those settled in the last few years. Most are relatively lawless places where local warlords can claim as much land as they can hold on to.
*Barbarian lands. These are the lands claimed by the human tribes that existed before and alongside the empire of Thray. The largest barbarian lands are found in the plains to the east but smaller tribes lived alongside the elven kingdoms.

'''Tiefling'''
It had long been said that the human empire of Thray was formed by a pact between the first emperor and demons. Since the sundering of that empire the depth of that pact has been reveiled, although the majority of the population of the old kingdoms have remained pure demonic ancestry has been revealed in many of the inhabitants of that region and has spread with other refugees to other parts of the continent.

'''Halfling'''

Halflings have never held a land of their own. They have always been a nomadic people small bands of whom have been found all over the continent for as long as anyone can remember. The various cataclysms effected them the least of all of the races although some grew rich after looting the now deserted elven cities after the conflagration. The two sub types of Halflings, Lightfoots and Stouts both live together in the wild lands.

'''Gnome'''

There has long been a close link between elves and Gnomes. The majority of the gnomish population, the rock gnomes, lived in elven cities living as what some considered servants, others pets. The Gnomes proved to be immune to the conflagration although many died as their Elven masters burned. The survivors are generally not expansionistic and may often maintain elven cities as best as they can and are often ousted by humans or orcs as they move into the area. A few gnomes have moved on and have formed their own cities. Small wild populations of 'forest gnomes' can still be found in the forests of the wild lands.

'''Half Orc'''

Half orcs are a rare breed as until recently human and orc rarely met. However, as humans push north and west and orcs push south and east interaction and conflict have become more common. Half orcs are generally despised by humans and may be driven from many of the more civilised human cities although the more lawless area respects their strength more. Among Orcs social status is based purely on strength so they do not discriminate as long as the half orc and hold her or him own among them.

'''Dwarf'''

The dwarvern race is currently in decline as more and more of their territory is claimed by the western orcs and their settlement of new lands is slower than that of humans due to their lesser birth rate.
*Mountain Dwarves. Those born in the remaining dwarvern thanes among the frost fang mountains. Many of the cities are under attack from orcs and still regularly war with each other. They tend to look down on the other types of dwarf.
*Hill Dwarves. These are the refugees from the events of the great betrayal who have formed now settlements outside of the traditional dwarven lands. They often attempt to keep the old traditions alive but have had to adapt to the new conditions. Many are bound to Mountain Dwarf thanes and are beginning to chafe under their rule.

'''Half-Elf'''

Half elves have always been few in number during the time of the elven kingdoms interaction with the humans of the Empire of Thray were few. Interaction with the eastern barbarians were even rarer and more violent leading to a some offspring. During the conflagration half elves proved to almost all be immune to the disease but their numbers were too low to prevent the fall of the kingdoms. Since the fall more half elves have been born as elves now find it hard to find mates of their own species. There is little discrimination against half elves in most human settlement although some elves consider them a sign of how low their species has fallen.

'''Elf'''

The elves used to be the most populous species on the continent until they were consumed by the burning. Now only a few scattered remnants remain.

*High Elves - These are the tiny proportion of the elven population that were immune to the burning. Often the only survivor of their settlement these refugees often join other civilizations such as humans or dwarves or travel to try and meet up with other elves. Greenberg, the last pure elven city contains a large population of these elves.

*Wood Elves - These are the few elves that remained uninfected. These were mostly members of the smallest, most obscure elven settlements often found deep within dark forests. The survivors are hugely paranoid of any other elves they may meet who might spread the infection to them and rarely leave their settlements.

'''Dragonborn'''

The ancestors of the Dragonborn were exiled from the far off land know as the Colour Empire and after having been at sea for over a year made land fall inn the Elven Kingdoms almost two centuries ago when the burning was just starting. The local Elven lord, seeing the doom of his people offered land to the refugees if they would provider protection from the human barbarians. The Dragonborn agreed and although the Elven lord and all his people were lost to the burning the Dragonborn remain, mostly entrenched in their city of Landfall some brave souls set out for adventure.

Adam:

Until two centuries ago the continent of Tara on the world of Vilag was if not peaceful then secure, the elven kingdoms ruling most of the land frequently quarreled amongst themselves but easily held off the occasional attacks from the Orc forces in the west and human Barbarians in the east. In the south the human empire of Thray spent most of its efforts subduing its own population rather than attacking others while in the North the Dwarf thanes dug deeper into Frost Fang Mountains. However, over a period of less than 50 years all three major civilisations fell resulting in wave after wave of refugees fleeing into the surrounding area changing the face of the continent of ever.

'''The burning'''

The fall of the elven kingdoms was the quickest and most devastating of the catastrophes which befell Tara. The kingdoms covered by far the largest area of the continent and their rule had lasted more for several thousand years, border skirmishes were common but large scale wars were rare but to a complicated web of alliances between the various kingdoms. Blessed with near immortality the elves spent their time achieving near perfection at the skills of their trade’s leaving to development of the most powerful magic as well as the greatest works of both art and architecture. The kingdoms were protected by soldiers who had spent several centuries honing their skills and lead by kings with thousands of years of experience. Almost invulnerable to outside attack the kingdoms were brought low from within by disease.

The disease was called the burning, it was characterised by fever and delirium, the symptoms slowly got worse over a period of a week or so until almost all affected by it died. Upon death the infected would burst into flame, immolating themselves and the area around them. Some said the conflagration was a curse from the gods or the devils, others that it was in some way created by the Elves enemies or that it was created in an accident. Whatever its cause the disease’s effect was enormous and it only effected elves. The disease showed no symptoms for several decades after infection but was still infectious so almost the entire elven population was infected before the danger was revealed. Magic healing was also useless as any magical energy directed at the infected would speed the course of the disease.

In less than a decade from the first cases of the conflagration less than one tenth of one percent of the Elven population was still alive and their cities were ablaze consigning the elven kingdoms to the history books.

'''The battle of a hundred princes'''

The empire of Thray was through to be the original home of humanity. It was rumoured that the first emperor Brute had made deals and even mated with devils in order for the power to form the empire. Certainly he and his decedents were cruel enough to be less than human. They formed an empire where all had their place and no deviation from that duty could be allowed, if you were born a farmer you would remain as such for the rest of their life and any attempt to change that role would end in your death.

The empire remained solid for over a thousand years, however, the emperor’s bloodline thinned over time until, as the conflagration destroyed the elven kingdoms to the north, the last emperor lay dying without heir. All the lords of the land raised their forces and marched to the capital city of Bruteholm to await being declared the new emperor, as the wait progressed from days to weeks to months fights broke out between the different lords and the plains surrounding the city turned to a river of blood. It was only at the end when the armies were reduced to a scant few squads that the emperor’s elite guards, the hellborn, strode into the battlefield and collected the remaining lords.

All were brought before the shrivelled remains of the emperor in his bed chambers, only the slightest spark of life remaining. The emperor declared that until one individual alone could rule the whole empire then the land would remain broken. He drew the crown from his wrinkled brow and as he died it fell to the ground and shattered into a hundred fragments. As the same time great earthquakes and storms wracked the lands driving many from their homes. In terror the lords each grabbed a fragment of the crown and fled.

When they returned to their lands, they found them changed, the geography different, areas which used to be on the coast were now deserts or forests. Even more strangely as a lord was slain and his position taken by another the land would change again, in the fallen empire of Thray, now the called the old kingdoms, the king and the land truly are one.

'''The great betrayal'''

The dwarvern thanes was a single unified empire made up of dozens of city states found throughout the frost fang mountains. Not an expansionistic people the dwarves were happy to dig their cities deeper into the mountains and trade with the Elves to the south. There was nothing the dwarves could do to stop the conflagration that ravaged the Elves apart from accept in refugees who were already infected and died just the same.

The thanes were held together by a single high king who ruled from the great city of Kaza-na-barak (Unbroken Mountain). The last king of the dwarfs was high king Veit Stone-song. With the fall of the Elven Kingdoms the Orc tribes of the west pushed further in land and overwhelmed several of the smaller dwarvern settlements looting them of wealth and weapons. In response the high king formed from the cream of the militaries of the various thanes a single mighty army lead by his greatest general Oskar Kirensky. The army was charged with retaking the fallen cities and pushing back the orc hordes and marched off to the west.

However, as they left one of the kings most trusted advisors Brottor Goldeneye, now only known, as ‘the betrayer’ desired the power and wealth that his ruler possessed and in secret plotted against him. So it came to pass that while the dwarven army Brottor’s clan took over the city of Kaza-na-barak and slew all those loyal to the king. Brotor also killed every member of the royal family to the last child and proclaimed himself to be the new high king.

When he heard of Brottor's treachery, Oskar marched his army back to the capital picking more forces up from the dwarven strongholds he passed on his way. By the time he reached the gates of Kaza-na-barak he lead the greatest dwarven army ever seen, however, Kaza-na-barak was the strongest fortress the world has ever seen, reputed to have been built by the dwarven gods themselves. The siege to take the city was enormous and it was over 20 years before the city finally fell and less than 1 in 5 of Oskar's forces remained. When finally the city fell and Brottor and all his clan were executed the dwarven lords were forced to elect among themselves a new high king. The first person that came to mind was Oskar himself but he announced that he was not worthy of the honour. At this announcement the lords began arguing, with each lord believing that they were most qualified to rule the kingdom. The arguing quickly turned to fighting and a second civil war quickly broke out.

In disgust Oskar and his army left the dwarven kingdoms and marched into the unknown north vowing to return when the dwarves needed him most. Sensing the weakness of the dwarves the orcs redoubled their attacks forcing the dwarves further and further east until they held less than a third of the land they did during the empires height. During this time many dwarves fled south into what used to be the elven lands where they formed new colonies to reinforce their old holds.

With the fall of the great empires and the death of most of the elves most of the lands have been left empty for almost 150 years now. Humans have been quick to take advantage of the vacuum and waves of refugees from the disaster that befell the empire of Thray moved to the north claiming the ruins of the previously elven cities forming the new kingdoms. These lands have in turn started to war against each other and have started to form new colonies of their own. To the north the dwarves have done the same although much slower. However, over time these colonies are growing rebellious wondering why they should toil so hard to help cities they have never set foot in. In the east and the west barbaric tribes of humans and orcs began to raid deeper and deeper into the previously elven lands. Mean while the Dragonborn, refugees from a far off empire of their own have begun to move out of their enclaves. Gnomes, once kept as servants, and some would say pets of the elves have found themselves in possession of many elven cities now their masters are gone and the Halflings, as always, continue to wander the known world.

Much of the lands still remain unclaimed, here a powerful individual can easily become a king.
The first wave of Task force Adamantium was cobbled together from the survivors of many capaigns from all over the sector and beyond. The vast majority of the regiments involved were significantly below strength with only the Techguard and local Bethsheba forces at full strength. Tradition would have folded the weakened units together to produce an overall force of about 20 regiments however, in order to get permision from Sector Command Lord General Jagger was forced to make his force seem stronger than it was neccessitating a beaurocratic slight of hand.
'''Fleet forces'''

The fleet forces assigned to Task force Adamantium indicate the low importance placed on their mission by sector command and the navy. Although prentiful transports were assigned the number of escorts were lower than requested and most were second line ships pulled from reserve duties. The exception is the carrier Lady of Pain representing a new and to date quite successful design, although its fighter compliment would prove un-usable on Telos itself. Luckely the traitor space fleet consisted of only a handful of system ships which were quickly dealt with. However, the Navy took this lack of orbital threat in withdraw much of its forces once the system had been secured leaving the ground forces without orbital support for much of the campaign.

The second wave of the Task force was significantly different to the first and represents the displeasure of Sector Command with Lord General Jagger. Although numerically superiour to the first wave the quality of the troops are generally second class with a few exceptions. The majority of the units are green troops on their first deployment and are often poorly equiped as well.
==Maximus 384 - 431==
Maximus was born in the great city of Rome at the time that the empire was crumbling. Maximus took service as a Legionnaire and he and his colleagues spent their time being rushed around the empire dealing with barbarian uprisings. Near the end of his 20 year service Maximus, now risen to a centurions rank, was garrisoned in Britain where he took a wife from among the natives and fathered several children. When his service ended Maximus decided to remain in Britain rather than take the long trip back to Rome with most of his men and thus requested that the reward for his service be land in Britain. Maximus’s family had long been Christian and he taught his children and people the ruled over the roman version of the faith resisting the changes to the local faith which estranged them from their neighbours. Maximus died of disease at the age of 47 leaving behind several children, his eldest son was Julius, named after the roman emperor who had first conquered Britain.

==Gwen 388-429==
Gwen was a native Britan that Maximus married. Her father and Uncle were involved in an uprising against the Roman garrison and were killed for their treason. Maximus married her to cement the Roman control of the region and was given the land previously held by her father, with the marrage she converted to the Roman Christianity. Dispite the bad blood between their races Maximus and Gwen seemed happy together. They had a single child, their son Julius. She died from a fever in 429.

==Julius 410 - 439==
Julius, born 410 was raised to be strong in the Roman faith and considered taking a holy order before he was made a knight. He was shocked when Rome decided to abandon Britain to Barbarians and tried to contact his few relatives still within the Empire but given the chaos of the time it is not known if any of his missives got through. Like his father, Julius married a native further diluting his Roman blood in his sons, Equinus, Achanthus and Zephyrinus. His life was fairly short not completing his third decade before being killed in the battle of Caerleon when his eldest son was less than a year old, he never knew his younger children as they were conceived only shortly before death. However, the story of his death is remembered with much honour within his family. Julius and his vassals were holding the flank of the Briton army when they were attacked by a much larger Saxon war band. Julius fault the Saxon Cheafton in single combat and was impaired by the Saxon’s great sword, however, thanks to god’s grave Julius did not fall instead dragging his foes sword from his grasp and decapitating him with his own weapon. This sight disheartened the war band and they fled the field of battle, it was only once they had fled from sight that Julius collapsed and died only after passing his sword to the squire to give to his then infant son Equinus when he came of age.

==Miniva 420 - 450==
Miniva was the daugher of a local noble who married Julius young, she was married for less than 2 years before she was widowed but still bore him three sons. She was left in charge of the manor and remarried quickly to maintain the stability of the estate. Her second husband was one of her cousins by the name of Gwain and she bore him a son called Brute. She found it difficult to balance the needs of her two families and was hurt by the bad blood between her sons and husband. She and her husband both died in a fire which destroyed part of the manor in 450.

==Gwain 400 - 450==
Gwain was the cousin of and second husband of Mineva. Originally he got on well with his step sons but eventually he bacame jelous that his blood would not inherit. He was a devout British Christian and tried to sway the family to that religion but met sturn resistance from the traditional Roman Christians in the estates. He died in a fire along with this wife.

==Brute 442 - 482==
Brute was the son of Gwain and Miniva making him Equinus's half brother. He was jealous of his older siblings and challenged his older brother to a duel on the day of his knighting. He was defeated and fled the family holdings although the scandal would blight the family for a generation. It is rumoured that Brute joined up with a group of mercenary Saxons and was eventually killed by them.

==Acanthus 440 -==
Acanthus is a practical down-to-earth man, quiet in most social situations but a competent fighter, while Equinus was fighting battles in other parts of the country it was Acanthus who remained at home protecting it from raiders. He married apparently for love as his bride bought little into the family although their union seems happy. Acanthus was particularly close to his niece and her death hit him hard as he was the one who discovered what that Saxon’s had done to her and her husband, he blames himself for not arriving earlier and saving her. Acanthus is very loyal to Julius although he prefers to receive orders rather than give advice. Upon Zephyrius he adopted his widowed bride Catherine into his own house and treats her as a pseudo daughter was somewhat disturbed when she married his biological son. He was accused of adultary in 496 but took it in his stride claiming to be to old for that sort of thing.

His Wife Bea disapeared in 498, Acanthus has left his home and duties and is desperately searching for her dispite his failing health.

==Zephyrius 440 - 490==
Zephyrius on the other hand is a larger than life figure always proclaiming his worthiness while getting very little done. He is an important figure at court and is often involved in courtly love proclaiming his undying love to one maiden after another before losing interest after a few weeks. Zephyrius is however, a great horseman and takes part in many tourneys although in most events his skills do not match up with his boasts. Zephyrius finally married in 490 to a woman over 30 years his junior called Catherine, unfortuantly after drinking to much at his wedding feast he died that night choking on his own vomit.

==Equinus 438 - 484==
Equinus, born 438, was raised by his mother who married again a few years after his father’s death. Equinus and his brothers got on well with their step father Gwain. However, when Equinus’s mother bore Gwain a son, Brute, their relationship with both step father and half-brother soured. Brute was jealous of his half-brother’s particularly Equinus who as the eldest stood to inherit the estate when he came of age. Things came to a head in 460 when Equinus was knighted, insensed Brute insulted his brother in front of their liege lord, forced to choose between the bonds of family and his own honour Equinus was forced to challenge his own half-brother to a duel which he won humiliating Brute. Brute left the family lands and did not return. Equinus joined the army to fight Vortigern in 462 and fought alongside and became close friends with twin knights by the name of Cubert and Craddoc, who had been raised in the heathen faith. Shocked, Equinus talked them into joining the true Roman Christian faith both. Once properly baptised they proposed that Equinus marry their sister Indeg to bond their houses. The marriage took place in 464 however; the couple did not get on and were rarely in each other’s company apart from their duties as a married couple. Despite this Indeg bore Equinus twin sons in 465, however, the first child older by a half hour was sickly and died within a few days before it was even named, the surviving on was called Julius after his grandfather hoping the name would bring luck. Equinus fought in several battles over the following decades but his history as having fought his own brother dogged his steps reducing his honour. Indeg bore him a daughter, Mineva, in 466 and a son Virilius in 467. He died in battle in 484.

==Indeg 435 -==
Julius’s mother Indeg was very different from her husband. Whereas he was a devoted Roman Christian she hardly paid lip service to the faith and is rumoured to still hold to the old religions of the land. She was openly hostile to her husband for most of his life generally considering his an unsuitable husband based on his lack on ambition. She shed not one tear at his death. Now well into her 5th decade Indeg is still in good health although she rarely leaves the family holdings any more, she oversees the running of the house hold when her son is not home and is a harsh mistress to the servants often having them beaten for even small infractions. She went missing in the winter of 489 and may have been killed by one of the servants after pushing them too far. To everyone's suprise she reapeared in 506 with child revealing that she has spent the last decade and a half at the king of the forest savage's court and the child had been born by immaculate conception. Many at court questioned this occurence.

==Cubert 440 -==
Cubert and Craddoc are Indegs twin brothers and thus Julius’s uncles. They are very close often finishing each other’s sentences. They both courted the same woman and when she chose Craddoc, Cubert vowed to never marry moving into his brother’s new home. They are less close to their sister Indeg but thought of Equinus as a brother rather than a brother in law. They were raised in a house which still followed the old ways but quickly converted to the Roman faith upon meeting Equinus. The brothers are good natured and now rather rotund older men who enjoy nothing more than hunting on their estate and tourneys. Both brothers are fond of their nephews but tend to treat Julius somewhat stand oafishly although they are closer to Virilius. Cubert addopted a child names Millie after his brothers wife in 507 after her family were killed in an accident, some wisper that the child is his bastard.

==Craddoc 440 -==
Both brothers are fond of their nephews but tend to treat Julius somewhat stand oafishly although they are closer to Virilius.

==Bea 438 - 498?==
Bea is Acanthus's wife. He caused a minor scandal by marrying a commoner apparently for love. She is a quiet woman, most at home in the kitchen, rather than at court. Like her husband she is laid-back and down to earth although she often worries for the safety of her son Michael as he acts as Julius's squire. She has two further children both daughters Camilla and Octavia.

Bea disapeared in 498 while visiting relatives. Acanthus is desperately searching for her.

==Millie 445 - 502?==
Millie is the wife of Craddoc. The eldest daughter of a fairly powerful lord she was courted by many knights in her youth. Both Craddoc and Cubert vied for her hand and she was one of the few things that could make the twins fight. In the end Craddoc won her but she has lived with both brothers since. She had born four children to date all girls, given her age further children are unlikely but she yearns for a son.

Millie disapeared from her private quarters in 502 without a trace. It is rumoured she was abducted by fae, strangly Cubert and Craddoc do not seem worried by her disapearence.

==Camilla 463 - 499?==
Eldest child of Bea and Accanthus. Unlike her parents she is very devout and felt drawn to take holy orders becoming a Nun at age 12 she currently resides at a convent far from the family estate. She disapeared after a saxon raid on the nunnary in 499 in which Morgan was temporarily captured.

==Michael 473 - 501==
The son of Acanthus and Bea. Michael is currently acting as his cousin Julius' squire. He has his fathers down-to-earth personality but has also learnt a spiritual side from his master. He is much kinder, more trusting and rather more social than Julius although he martial training has been less successful. He was knighted in 490 and presented with an estate by Julius.

He was shocked by Julius's death in 495 along with the obliteration of the cream of the countries knights. To his estonishment Virilius was unwilling to take up the role of the head of the family and due to the age of his father and uncles the role was forced upon him. Although he feels overwhelmed he feels that it is his duty to shoulder him new responsibilities.

He became close to his aunt in law Catherine after her husband died on their wedding night and she was adopted into his house. They started to spend alot of time together and love blossomed leading to their marriage in 496. Their first child a boy called Agrippa was born in 497.

Michael attempted to organise a more formal allance between the knights of the land to strengthen their links by pooling resources for the good of all. The attempt was partually sucessful but it is yet to be seen if it will survive his death.

Michael was killed on the battlefield against Saxon invaders in 501.

==Octavia 475 - 485==
Daughter of Bea and Acanthus. She died in a riding accident.

==Meredith 470 - 490==
The arranged bride of Julius, she did not meet her husband until their wedding. She has little in common with him and spends most of the time in her own appartments in the estate. Unlike her husband she has little time for religion. Is skilled at tapestry making and several of her creations now adorn the estate. She has been badly effected by the death of her first child Maximus. She died giving birth to her second child Felix in 490.

==Julius 465 - 495==
Julius is the current head of the house after the death of his father four years ago. He is a studious man who often spends hours in his houses library reading the bible or past household account and discussing philosophy with the local priest (a distant relation). He is a very pious man who considered taking holy orders until his duty to his family won out. In battle Julius is average at best and recognises this preferring to defer to better fighters when possible when fighting is necessary he prefers to intimidate his opponents with his greater height. He is outspoken about the destruction of the old faith and the forcible conversion of its followers. He follows the Roman version of Christianity and although less out spoken about it than the heathen code he feels that many of the lands problems are due to Britain’s worshipping in the ‘wrong’ way. He expects any visitors to his lands to follow his traditions as a matter of courtesy.

Outside of his favoured topics Julius is rather hesitant in social situations preferring to stay in the background, however, he is prone to making snap decisions about people and pigeon-holing them based on first impressions. He is proud of his Roman heritage and still remains in rare contact with his family far away. Julius finds most of his family to be rather embarrassing, his brother is always on the edge of almost causing scandal and Zephyrus’s boasting wears on him. He gets along better with Acanthus, Cubert and Craddoc although he has problems with the latter two's bumptious ways and pagan leanings. He often asks Acanthus for advice, particularly on military matters although the old man is not keen and taking on such responsibility. Julius does not know what to do with his mother, he knows she does not respect him and his ways and likewise he would like her gone, however, he recognises that she is skilled at running the household and is a necessary part of the family. Like his father before him he tries to avoid her as much as possible.

Once knighted Julius asked his liege for a wife and was quickly provided with the youngest daughter of another of his vassals. The couple were not close but knew their duty, unfortunately their first child, a son, was born sickly and did not live to see its first birthday. The death effected both parents badly. A second child was born in 490 but the birth was difficult and Meredeth died. Driven temporaryly insane by gref Julius decided to pose his daughter as a boy and named 'him' Felix. Shortly after Julius remarried to the youngest daughter of him leige Rosalind. A new child was born in 493, a true boy this time names Claudius, unsure what to do in relation to his previous lies, Julius continued to raise Felix as a boy and his heir. The problem was removed from Julius's hands in 495 with his death in battle. Only a few servents are aware of Felix's true nature.

==Virilius 467 -==
Julius’s brother Virilius is very different to his elder brother. When as his brother is tall, scholarly and Pious Virilius is short, physical and far more lustful. Although getting to an age when he should be looking for a wife he is happy to dalliance with local maidens instead. Despite his short comings Virilius is a skilled fighter and loyal to his house and brothers well-being. He has no want to inherit the estate being happy to remain the second brother. He is said to be the only person that his mother actually likes. The inevitable happened in 489 and he obtained a bastard daugher called Eve from a peasent girl called Jezabel. Eventually in 491 he gave in to family preasure and got married, however, to spite them he married his lover Jazabel, a peasent. He had a further child with his new wife in 493 a boy named Adam. He was shocked by his brothers death in battle in 495 and was horrified that it made him the head of the family, unable to deal with the responsibility he has passed most of the political power of the family to his cousin Michael.

Upon Michaels death he was forced to take charge and followed his fellow nights into battle against rebel forces. After an outstanding victors he spend most of the spoils on a feast of legondery proportions.

Virillius's first wife died birthing his third child in 504 and he quickly remarried to a lady named Annabell who in turn birthed a further five children before again dying in child birth along with the final child in 510.

With the appearence of Arthur and his nephew Felix, Virilius stopped taking part in family affairs and gave in to his baser instincts spending all his days drinking and feasting.

Biddie is famed for her singing voice. Biddie married an older knight called Cuthbert in 487, she bore him a daughter named Jillian in 488.
When she came of age she started to take over the running of the family as felix was unwilling to maintain this role. Still disgised as a man she has appeared at serveral court sessions and is trying to make a name for herself as a great warrior. She is somewhat smitten with the boy king and was unhappy when he chose Gwenivere as his wife.

Following her injuries as the battle of Branden Hill while feverish she slept with Hermes her Dcotor who she mistook for Arthur. She became pregnant and after nine months of hiding her condition gave birth to a daughter. She bid her servent take the child from her sight and leave it at the church door. The priest took in the child and when she 'first heard' of it Felix took pity on the foundling and bid it be raised by one of her servent in the manor house. To her displeasure the child was named Gwenivere by the priest in honor of the queen.

Adam:

The planet Telos is located on the border of a wild space region between Segmentum Solar and Segmentum Pacificus. Although technically part of sub sector Naultalus Telos is quite far from the other planets in the sector. Telos itself has undergone terraforming at some point in its past carried out an unknown species and appears to still be going on. Without this terraforming Telos would be a frozen snowball with gravity less than half that of Terra, however, due to the terraforming a wide equatorial band of the planet instead forms a large tropical jungle and the gravity in this area is slightly more than Terra standard. These conditions are believed to be maintained by a number of alien artefacts found on the border of the habitable area’s which are currently being studied by the Adeptus Mechanicus. The planet is home to a field which interacts badly with imperial antigravity technology and even reduces the effectiveness of other flying technologies forcing most of the travel over the planet’s surface to be via land. The planet is rich is various metallic ore’s including some which are not found on any of the other local planets.

As well as a number of local species which seem to be evolved from Terra standard organisms suggesting the planet may have first been colonised during the dark age of technology the planet is also home to both humans and a population of wild orks. The majority of the human population lives in one of seven hive cities founded by imperial colonists see below. A sizable majority of ‘native’ humans live outside of the hives in their own mobile settlements. Small Ork settlements dot the planet but are destroyed whenever imperial or native forces find them.

The imperial presence on the planet is relatively new, the planet was rediscovered by the imperium just over 300 years ago. A troop convoy sent to join the newly forming Invicticus crusade were caught in a warp storm and forced into real space. The convoy consisting of 4 troop ships and 2 escort destroyers appeared at the edge of the Telos system. As it was unknown how long the storm would continue the commanding officer decided to investigate the system and soon discovered a planet overrun by Orks but harbouring small tribes of humans who had not yet seen the emperors light. The leader of the guard contingent Lord General Odin Sarsgaard of Valhalla decided to mount an invasion to drive back the Orks and bring the planet into the Imperium. Over 10 years of hard fighting the Ork forces were decimated and the surviving guard forces had founded a number of cities on the planet. A few years later the storm abated and contact was re-established with the rest of the imperium.

Telos is classed as an imperial world although predictions are that it will become a true hive world in a little under a millennia. The major industry of Telos is mining and military vehicle construction which makes up the vast majority of its tithe to the Imperium. The metallic ore found beneath Telos’s crust produces particularly strong armour and over 10% of all tanks used in the sub sector are produced in Telos. The surface of Telos is particularly dense making conventional mining difficult and most of Telos’s hives are formed around a weakness or breach that allows access to the ore beneath. Telos has also been subject to 3 imperial guard founding’s to date which have served with honour.

The capital of Telos is New Valhalla the city formed by Lord General Odin Sarsgaard and the remainder of his Valhalla regiments once the planet had been secured. Odin was made the first lord governor of the planet and the other cities scattered about the planet were formed by the survivors of the other regiments.

Adam:

=Noble houses=

There are at present 143 registered greater noble houses and as many as several thousand minor houses and trade groups in Hive Babel. Each house has various commercial holding throughout the city which provides them with income and resources. The rules defining what makes a noble house and complex and labyrinthine with minor houses constantly jockeying for position, greater noble houses are required to pay tithes and provide troops for the pdf, in exchange they get one or more seats in the conclave and influence on the city governor.

There are three tiers of noble houses with various renown if not necessarily power. The most renown houses and the oldest are those descended from the original imperial guard regiments sent to pacify the planet. The city itself was founded by the remnant of over half a dozen regiments and several noble houses can now trace their ancestors back to one or more of these organisations, houses who can trace their lineage back to a specific regiment are often allied as they have similar culture. These houses are often the most powerful although many have also fallen from grace over the years. Second tier houses are descended from organisations which settled on the planet shortly after the conquest of the planet, normally in the first few decades. Almost as old as the first tier and more numerous these houses tend to be less powerful but still have significant influence. Third tier houses represent the concerns that have arrived or have formed in more recent years (the last few hundred years), these groups tend to be smaller and more specialised that the other tiers, the majority of the lesser houses are of this type, most have limited resources but some are now important major houses.

The city is currently governed by Lord Randolf Branden-Smythe of house Branden-Smythe his position is dependent on the will of the planetary governor Lord Odinson who can appoint a new city governor at any point. Lord Branden-Smythe is advised by a council made up of the major noble houses which is called the conclave, each major house has one or more seats on this council.

Most of the majority of the houses holdings are located in the outer ring of the city near the wall well away from the city core and the mines although most houses have scattered holdings in the guild areas as well. Conflict between houses both physical and political is quite common. Most conflicts are political with each house employing a legion of spy’s and informers in an attempt to obtain blackmail material on their rivals. Large scale combat is fairly rare but each house has a substantial PDF levy which act as a personal army meaning if fighting breaks out it can be large scale and devastating. In addition each house has a smaller house guard which are more skilled and better equipped than most PDF units and often act as body guards and enforcers for the house. More common conflicts are constant border skirmishes between houses located near each other, it is common for gangs of younger nobles and their retainers at attack and sabotage enemy holdings near their homes in some cases leading to permanent no man’s lands between rival houses territories.

Duels are common ways to deal with disagreements between lower ranked nobles. The rules and methods of duels have change every decade or so as new fashions come into place. The present normal method of duelling is using shock swords. Between nobles these combats are normally to the first strike or more commonly to the pain with the first fighter to cry out being the looser. Fights to the death are less common and are more likely to involve champions rather than nobles. Fights normally take place naked to reduce cheating and to allow more vulnerable locations to be targeted. The blades are blunted but designed so that each hit will result in a larger charge being released. Early blows only tingle but after a few hits the voltage will have a numbing effect before causing pain and after a dozen or more blows death becomes likely.

Although their structure varies largely between houses an average house will have one or two primary families, given imperial technology, 4 or more generations may be alive at once, these individuals normally do not have ‘day jobs’ and spend their time running the house itself although they may have specific roles such as in charge of the house levy. More distant members of the families, cousins and those marrying into the family are often given specific roles in the family’s business, managers of various house holdings, PDF officers, priests, tech priests members of the Adaptus Terra, etc. although in many cases these roles are largely ceremonial. A family may well have several hundred cousins and in the case of larger houses maybe thousands. Outside of the family themselves are various servant families who may have worked for the same household for several generations and are often trusted and supported by the family. For exceptional service some of these groups may eventually marry into the lower levels of the noble house becoming nobles themselves although this is very rare. This level of servant’s number in the tens to hundreds of thousands. Below the servant families are temporary workers hired as needed normally from the guilds or even the slum dwellers. These individuals hope to be recruited by the house as long term servants and thus provide security for their families. Thus almost the whole population of the hive works directly or indirectly for the noble houses.

==Example Houses==

House Branden-Smyth is the primary house of the hive and the home of the current governor. House Branden-Smyth has always been a strong first tier house for the life of the city but it has only been in the last century that it has risen to its current position. The house has a broad power base but controls a large chunk of the banking and finance sector as well as much of the hives infrastructure such as water reclamation and power generation. The houses rise to power started with the current Governor Randolf Branden-Smyth becoming house patriarch upon the poisoning of his father (rumour has it that Randolf or his sister arranged the assassination). Randolf then reawakened an old feud with house Thig leading to him killing the leader of the house in a duel this brash action almost lead to an all-out war between the houses and resulted in the then ruling house stepping in and forcing house Branden-Smyth to pay reparations. However, before his house was weakened the previous city governor was found guilty of treason and executed by the inquisition, it is believed that Randolf provided evidence against the governor as he was rewarded with much of the fallen houses resources as well as city governorship. He used his new powers to avoid the reparations and shift the charges to House Thig weakening his long rivals. House Branden-Smyth is by far the most powerful house in the city larger than its two nearest rivals, however, it is not indestructible and Randolf still requires the support of the conclave to enact laws on the city. In addition to Randolf’s position as city governor, his twin sister is also the head of the house levy and his younger maternal half-brother Marcus Silverman is the cities Cardinal giving the house both temporal and spiritual power.

House Thig is a strong first tier house which had long feuded with house Branden-Smyth although the conflict has rarely escalated to full scale warfare. The feud was at its strongest 60 years ago when the then leader of the clan and father of the current clan patriarch Erasmus Thig was killed in a duel with Randolf Branden-smyth. This resulted in the houses levy’s be mobilized and the fighting having to be stopped by the then governor Eliot Macon who blamed house Branden-Smyth and forced them to pay crippling reparations. With Branden-Smyth becoming the ruling house 40 years ago Thig has been forced to ‘play nice’ with them but Erasmus still attempts to do what he can to weaken Randolf’s power base. Thig has very strong links to the Adaptus Mechanicus with each family’s oldest child joining the priesthood of the Cog, in exchange the priesthood has provided Thig with the plans to various high tech equipment that they sell on to other houses in exchange for support.

The Quidatch – Smaug trading alliance has only been promoted to the ranks of the greater noble houses within the last decade. The trading alliance was formed from the marriage of two minor noble houses. Due to their upstart nature and small size the house is in danger of losing its position unless it can ally itself with a larger house. However, due to its rapid rise it has few friends at this time. Its current leader Akhmed Quidatch only barely survived a recent assassination attempt which killed his wife and the houses future seems dark.

House Quich is an example of an average noble house. It is a second tier house formed as part of an investment cartel exploiting the recent imperial occupation of Telos. Quich is not a specialised house and holds a wide variety of holdings throughout the hive. The current leader of house Quich is Herman Quich who generally supports the status quo of the hive as his house is currently doing well.

House Mongo is a first tier house. Once very powerful it has suffered reduced fortunes over the centuries although it remains a significant force in the politics of Babel. They have long been a significant manufacturing concern and produce many vehicles, however, other smaller hungrier houses have risen up and taken more and more of the market weakening the once great house. The house also has a strange culture leading back to their original home world of Artemis, the house has very defined gender roles with the two sexes remaining socially separated for much of their life even after marriage. Un married women are expected to join the PDF and fight, upon marriage women move into politics, police work and espionage. Men are expected to learn a practical trade usually working in a house factory until marriage when they are moved to management and scholarly pursuits. House Mongo is also famous for only breeding within their own house and the few other houses descended from their home planets regiment leading to an inability to ally with other houses via marriage. The current house matriarch is Alisha Mongo and the Patriarch is Anansi Mongo.

House Still Water is a first tier house of great influence. It was formed from the officers of a regiment from the plant Typhon IV. Typhon IV consists of a single large ocean dotted with thousands of small islands which periodically would be flooded by massive storms, thus the people lived most of their lives on boats travelling from island to island. As Telos has no large bodies of liquid water the troops from Typhon IV were badly out of place and were mostly destroyed by orks in the battle of Valenville, the survivors formed house will water and put their skills to operating transport craft between the hives. In the present over 40% of all inter hive trade goes via House Still Water vehicles making them a very wealthy house with a good information gathering network throughout the hive. The nobles of this house are considered jaded even by the other nobles with little to do but spend their fortunes they throw some of the most lavish parties of the hive and are known for sudden changes in fashion, one week they may be paying exalbident prices for exotic offworld drugs the next demanding to be taken to safaris away from the hive to hunt native animals. It is this house which started the current fashion of duelling although few members are still interested in that. The current head of house Stillwater is Alexia Still water the house matriarch.

House Grizburn is somewhat of an oddity. It is a second tier house formed early in Telos’s life as an imperial colony. The majority of the vehicles on Telos run of hydrocarbons derived from the sap of certain types of native trees, although there are some imperial plantations most harvesting of these trees is undertaken by the native human population. House Grizburn is the result of a collaboration between several native tribes and imperial merchants resulting to a house containing the blood of both groups. Although quite wealthy the house is considered barbarians by most noble houses. House Grizburn’s holdings in Babel are relatively small as many of the houses members spend much of their time in the wilderness, however, they have strong trade connections with many of the houses particularly Thig and Mongo. The current head of the house in Babel is Gunther Grizburn.

House Odinson is the house of the planetary governor. Although not native to hive babel the house has some limited holdings in the city. It is widely known that these holdings are largely a front for a spy network to allow the governor to keep an eye on what does on in the city. Although originally allied to house Branden-Smyth house Odinson has become more adversarial as the city governor has revealed his plans to become less dependent on the planets capital city for its trade needs leading to the city governor being snubbed several times by his superior including having his choice of PDF head being denied. The current head of the house in Babel is Grimma Oldinson.

House Macon was the ruling house for over 100 years until 40 years ago when they were replaced by house Branden-Smyth. Their fall came when the then governor Louise Macon was found to be involved in selling military vehicles to other planetary regimes that intended to try to secede from the Imperium. Both the planetary governor’s forces and the Inquisition fell upon the house and its members were ruthlessly purged. Only by spending all of their political capital did the few survivors remain their major house status. It is rumoured that house Branden-Smyth was the one that informed on the previous governor but if so the current head of the house Claude Lefoux does not openly seem to hold a grudge as he supports the current ruling house.

House Sun is a small third tier house with more power than their size and position would suggest due to their specialist trade. House sun runs factories that produce a variety of chemicals and medicines, primarily they sell recreational drugs to other houses which bring in large profits but at this role they are one among many. However, they have a second semi-secret role, they also produce poisons and for an extra fee someone to administer those poisons. House sun remains entirely mercenary in this role they will work for anyone who is willing to pay them and do not take sides in conflicts. The current leader of house sun in Hiro Sun.

The Pillars of Society is a Black Crusade game that I plan to start in a few weeks, I am currently looking for 4-6 players and the game should run for about 3 months give or take.

The game is going to take place on the Imperial World of [[Telos]] in the Hive city of [[Babel]].

The party will have the job or trying to overthrow the current rulers of the city and turn it over to the gods of chaos.

The idea is that there are eleven 'pillars of society', organisatations that control the city and in order to cause a revoltion a number of these pillars will need to be removed by the players. Each player should select one pillar to work against, each session the plan of one of the players will be put into action and that player will be in charge for that week.
Generally the missions should be somewhat undercover as if the imperial forces find out about the heretics then they will be hunted down.

You can choose to dedicate a mission to a Chaos god, doing so gets you stat bonuses while working on the mission and increased Infamy if you succeed. However, you also get increased corruption if you succeed or not. Generally a mission would have to be in the gods style to be dediclated (i.e. kill things for Khorne, Cause disease or dispair for Nurgle, Corruption for Slaanesh and betrayel or change for Tzeentch)

The bonuses are as follows: -

Khorne - +5 to BS or WS
Nurgle - +5 T
Slaanesh - +5 Fel
Tzeentch - +5 Int or WP
