Newborn snatched while mother slept in next room
A newborn baby only hours old was snatched from a house in the Newington area of the city yesterday lunch time. The mother, Agnes Richard 23, had just given birth at home in the presence of her midwife and Dr. Stephen Lang of Edinburgh General Hospital. The woman had experienced a complicated birth only moments before and while the doctor and the midwife attended to the woman a figure had appeared at the open window, reached in and lifted the baby right out of his cot. By the time the good doctor had rushed outside the infant and the kidnapper had disappeared.
