==Background: Tonrar of Clan Bearclaw==
Tonrar was born to one of the nomadic tribes of the Norlands 38 winters ago to Tuuluuway and Uvlugaig. Like all of his people his life was hard and many of his brothers and sisters did not live to see their first year. Tonrar's father was known as a good hunter; although perhaps rather too fond of ale and his motherw as the best herbalist of the tribe. Although his orcish lineage did not cause him the scorn that the less-practical southern folks may have felt, he was still considered different enough to be picked on by his peers among the tribe's children. The son of the tribes chieftain, Tipvigut, showed a particular disdain for Tonrar. Tonrar's father was killed in a great storm when Tonrar was 8 and, as was the tribe's custom, his mother was taken into the chieftain's household making Tonrar and Tipvigut brothers of a sort. This further enraged Tipvigut and he made Tonrar the scapegoat for all the misfortunes of the tribe. He and many of the other boys would often beat Tomar.

After fleeing from one such beating, Tonrar came across a hermit priest of Hieronemus who was camping near the tribe. Tonrar knew that although such men were considered useful advisers, their ways were considered strange to the tribe. Most of the Norlands normally worshipped the Mother with only a minority of converts openly following the southern gods. Somewhat hesitantly, Tonrar approached the priest and asked for help. The old man, who went by the name of Chulyin, agreed: if in return Tonrar would act as his servant. For the next 5 years, Tonrar learnt under the old man who taught him how to think his way out of trouble, as well as how to fight. In return Tonrar would sneak away from the tribe and hunt food for the old priest.

In his 15th year Tonrar fell in love. She was named Ikniqpalagaq and was considered the most beautiful girl of the whole tribe. When the other young men tried to impress her with feats of strength and skill, Tonrar followed the training of his mentor and instead found out what Ikniqpalagaq was interested in. He discovered from her older sisters that Ikniqpalagaq loved above all the smell of the white rose which would only grow on the most sheltered ledges of a single mountain range. Tonrar travelled to these mountains (itself a great feat) and returned with a sack full of the blooms. His mother then converted the flowers into a perfume which he presented to Ikniqpalagaq. Impressed by his gift, Ikniqpalagaq agreed to a betrothal. This enraged Tipvigut who considered Ikniqpalagaq to rightfully be his and he challenged Tonrar to a duel for Ikniqpalagaq's hand at the betrothal feast.

The duel took place in the snow the next day. Tipvigut had grown to be a full two heads taller than Tonrar and was known to be one of the best fighters of the tribe and was the expected winner. However, Tonrar proved to be the more skilled fighter and was able to avoid all off Tipvigut's blows until he tired himself out. Tonrar then chose that moment to strike, knocking Tipvigut to he knees. Tonrar raised his spear but could not bring himself to kill the bigger man, instead striking him in the face with the haft of his spear, breaking Tipvigut's nose, most of his teeth, and knocking him out. Tonrar then walked from the circle. He did not count on Tipvigut's father's obstinacy though, although the chieftain recognized that it was his sons stupidity that had caused him to lose he could not stand the stain on his families honor that his son's survival had caused. He ordered Tonrar's death. However,some of the chieftains men warned Tomar in advance and he and Ikniqpalagaq fled the clan with their hunters on their heels.

Tonrar fled to his mentor who agreed to protect them and to marry them. However, the hunters interrupted their honeymoon. Chulyin tried to hold off the executioners but only survived long enough to allow the newly-married pair to flee into the night. In an attempt to avoid pursuit Tonrar and Ikniqpalagaq were forced to run into one of the largest snowstorms seen for many ears. The storm blew for many days and nights and at some point Tonrar and Ikniqpalagaq were separated. Although Tonrar searched for several days there was no sign of his bride. Heartbroken and alone, Tonrar considered ending it all but would not allow his enemies the victory this would be. Instead
he headed south.

Tonrar arrived in Volkrania and lacking any other means to support himself lived as a hunter and mercenary. Tonrar worked hard for several years and travelled most of Volkrania on one mission or another. He grew from a simple grunt to the leader of a small band himself. Although originally high-spirited he quickly learned to save up the money he earned rather than live from job-to-job. By his 25th birthday he was wealthy enough to buy a patch of land and to settle down with one of the camp followers he had had his eye on called Mary. Although not the love of his life like Ikniqpalagaq, she was attractive enough and offered him a life of peace. They settled down and started a family with a son called Tuly after Tonrar's father and a few years later, a girl called Margaret after Mary's mother.

Tonrar's peaceful life came to an end with the [[Purge of Fire]]. Tonrar's village was attacked by a small patrol of Mangragora. As the only member of the village who had fighting experience Tonrar tried to lead a defence but the attackers swept through the village slaughtering and burning as they went. Tonrar was almost killed by the patrol leader when a burning building-collapsed on both of them.

When Tonrar came to a day later, the attackers were gone and the village was no more. Tonrar buried his wife and daughter (his sons body was lost in the fire) and left the village never to return. Tonrar returned to his life as a mercenary, originally as a way to strike back at the Mandragora who had taken his family from him,  eventually once the war ended as it was the only way he knew to survive.

Now quickly approaching middle age and feeling his age, Tonrar is looking for a way to make his fortune again. He has started to feel a callto return to his roots and see what has become ofhis people in his absence of many years.
===Personality===
Tonrar is a rough and rather bitter man. He is rather standoffish to newcomers but can be quite talkative once he knows someone. He has a large number of stories of his exploits as a mercenary and win happily talk for hours to a good audience. He often feels quite paternal to younger companions.

In combat and in life, Tonrar prefers to think his way around an opponent rather than to attack them head on whenever possible: if given a choice of A or B he will try to come up with an option C. Like all of his people he has a strong code of honor and his word is his bond, although he is smart enough to recognize the difference between the word and the spirit of a deal.

Tonrar is quite superstitious keeping a number of lucky charms and often making small sacrifices to the Gods after fights to give thanks for his survival. Tonrar, as an old campaigner, recognizes the worth of his equipment and will spend much of his free time cleaning his weapons and patching his amour and clothes.

Tomar holds a grudge against the Mandragora for the deaths of his family but will not attack one on sight unless provoked. Due to his heritage he is tolerant of halforcs and even full orcs and goblins although he knows better than to trust them without proof.
===Appearance===
Tomar is of slightly less than average height but is far wider than average. He has dark brown, almost black, hair but pale blue eyes. His orcish heritage shows in several small ways: his skin although pale has a faint green tinge to it and his fingernails tend towards claws. The biggest giveaway is his face: his nose is flattened and his jaw in pronounced, small tusks show when he smiles or grimaces. To cover these features Tonrar normally grows a full beard which he keeps carefully trimmed. He normally wears very practical clothing, normally leathers or furs. These are normally quite old but well-maintained.
